Susie Mae (Johnson) Harris-Finney, or “Gulley” as she was affectionately called by those close to her, completed her journey on May 22, 2018 at the blessed age of 72. Susie Mae was born on July 20, 1945 in Hayneville, Alabama. She became a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in 1959. She was one of the original members of Henry Dunn and The Dynamic Dundaleers and the Mt. Olive Oliveers. She was also a radio personality on the Road to Glory Gospel Radio Program. During her life, she worked as a dental assistant and as portrait studio manager at Nelson’s Photography and Olan Mills, where she won a variety of awards and accolades for her achievements in sales. In 1995, while managing the portrait studio, she leveraged her love for gospel music to launch a radio program on 95.9 FM the Light, The Gospel Train, which later evolved into The Gospel Train with Paul and Susie Finney after marrying her beloved husband, Paul Finney. In 1997, she retired from the portrait studio due to a brain aneurysm and focused her life on her children, family and spreading the word of God. In August 2017, the couple proudly celebrated the 22nd anniversary of The Gospel Train.
Susie was preceded in death by her mother, Octavia (Leslie) Camak; father, Mitchell Ely, and great-granddaughter, Loyalty Harris.
She leaves to cherish her memory loving husband, Orange Paul Finney; children, Joseph (Julie) Harris, Shonda Harris all of Akron, OH, and Aimee (Ryan) Wade of Barberton, OH; step-son, Danny Finney of Indianapolis, IN; step-daughter, Melody Finney of Akron, OH; sisters, Jeannette (Johnny) Camak-Perdue of Akron, OH and Evelyn Marsh of Las Vegas, NV; aunts, Mary (Henry) Dunn, Ida Mae Johnson all of Akron, OH, Mary Johnson of Birmingham, AL; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren;1 niece, and a host of cousins, family and friends.
