Joe Nathan McGhee was born on Saturday, March 25, 1950, in Opelika, Alabama, to Lucille (nee Blackmon) McGhee-Davis and Frank McGhee. When Joe was 11 years old, he moved to the southwest side of Akron, Ohio. He attended Thornton Elementary, Thornton Junior High and graduated from South High School, Class of 1968. In his younger years, Joe had a passion for fine clothing and amateur boxing. Those close to him knew of his lifelong artistic talent, having created many drawings and oil paintings. Joe also loved walking, grocery shopping, and talking on the phone. Several of his children and siblings would hear from Joe several time a day. Joe also relished in listening to the lectures and speeches of Malcom X and Minister Louis Farrakhan, even until his last hours.
Joe transitioned from this life to glory, on the early morning of Saturday, May 29, 2021, at his home in Akron. He was 71 years old.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Davis; father, Frank McGhee; and brothers, Cleven and Albert McGhee, and Quentin Martin.
Joe leaves to cherish his memory, sons, Joe Nathan (Akela) Nunn and Robert L. Nunn of North Carolina, Sir Joe Ali McGhee of California; daughters, Melissa (Missy) Norris, NaeShon Robinson of Akron, Monique R. McGhee of California, Latoya (David) Thomas of Akron, Rhosheka (Joe) Finn of Seattle; sisters, Dorothy Oden and Annie Stewart of Akron, Linda, Mary and Denise McGhee, Aileen Grant and Bobbie Sue Buchannon of Alabama ; brothers, Wilbert McGhee of Akron, Wayne McGhee of Alabama; 29 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and dear friends.
