Monday, May 14, 2018, Ater Mae Curtis was called home at 7:55 a.m. After leaves to cherish her memory her baby sister Linda Robinson of New York, and (4) sons, Robert Curtis of N. Canton, Ohio Bobbie (Melanie) Curtis of Houston, Texas, Orlucas, Jr. (Javonda) Curtis of West Chester, Ohio, Alton Curtis, Sr. of Canton, Ohio and grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Ater Mae (Dyer) Curtis was born in Fayetteville, Tennessee on July 12, 1920, to the late Hollis “Bill” and Mattie Sue Dyer. She was the first of four daughters to this union and upon their mother’s death she and her siblings were raised by the late Sam and Lillie Benton, their grandparents. Ater was preceded in death by four half-sisters, and one half-brother; her husband, Orlucas Curtis, Sr.; sister, Sarah McDonald; sister, Martha Boyd; daughter, Mattie V. Burns; grandson, Stephen Burns; granddaughter, Linda Susan Burns. In 1941` she joined her husband in Canton, Ohio, who moved to Ohio seeking employment, along with their two children Robert and Mattie. They later enlarged their family by three more children, Bobbie, Orluca, Jr. and Alton, Sr. Ater’s career included working at Onesto Hotel, St. Francis Hotel, the Canton Club, The Downtown Motor Inn. She later returned back to the Onesto where she retired as the supervisor and head cook. Along with being a mother and a grandmother Ater enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, crocheting, quilting, talking for hours with friends and family, and entertaining. She loved to feed anyone who crossed her threshold, there was always room for one more at her table. After was a mother her church and adored her church family, looked forward to going to church until her health began to fail her. She always believed in the power of prayer and would encourage others to do right and love people. She would say she wants to treat people the way she wanted to be treated and she was just trying to get to heaven. She put her children first and would often sacrifice things she needed to make sure they had what they wanted and needed. Ater had a sweet tooth and would often eat her cake with her meal, she loved extra sweet tea.
