Willie "Herman" Smith, 80 of Canton, Ohio passed away on April 8, 2015 after a brief illness. Willie Herman was born in Canton, Ohio on December 30, 1934 to the late Ivory C. Smith and Zella D. Smith, Hailey. Herman graduated from McKinley High School in the class of 1953 –1954. He joined the Army, May 4, 1955. While he was in the Army he became a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division, and he had 35 Jumps. From this Herman was well known for his one hand push up, and was good at it too. He had numerous awards such as Expert Sub-Machine Guns, Sharpshooter Rifle and Carbine Guns, Parachute Badge, and Motor Vehicle Drivers Badge. He also graduated from Signal School. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1958. When he came home he was hired at Republic Steel on April 17, 1959. he worked there until he joined the Timken Company in 1964. He retired from the Timken Company on June 17, 1997.
He was preceded in death by his brothers; Ivory Clayton Smith II and Ernest Smith, sisters; Lillie Norean Mosley and Ernestine Smith Gordon.
Herman is survived by his dedicated wife of 52 years Carole D. (Cunningham) Smith and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. One niece who stands out is his Oldest living niece, Sandra Armstead. Sandra has helped him and his wife in many ways. The giving of her time and labor of love which will never be forgotten. Also leaving to cherish his loving memory his brother Pastor Robert L. Smith ( Lillie) , sister in laws; Iphagenia Smith, Gayle Redding of Canton, Ohio, and Lorraine Bibby (Frank) of El Dorado, Arkansas, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
