Rev. William Henry Henderson's Obituary

William Henry Henderson, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, peacefully transitioned from this life on June 7, 2025, at Hanover Healthcare Center after an extended illness. He was born on October 16, 1947, in Canton, Ohio, to Elmer and Aileene Henderson. Affectionately known as "Billy," he graduated from Sandy Valley High School and later earned an Associate's Degree in Divinity. A proud U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Vietnam War and went on to serve over 25 years with the Canton Police Department, retiring as a patrolman. A devout Christian, Billy was a dedicated member and Assistant Pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Waynesburg, Ohio. His ministry extended beyond the pulpit, serving in various capacities including transporting senior citizens and leading the Canton McKinley Sr. Living Ministry. Billy had a lifelong passion for music. Known as "Little Billy Van," during the 1960's he toured Europe as the lead singer for a German band and even opened for the pop group ABBA. At home, in the 1970's and 80's, he was the go-to DJ for family gatherings, weddings, and reunions. He was also a proud member of the Singing Wonders, a local gospel quartet group. His musical tastes were as vibrant as his personality—he especially loved Grover Washington, Lou Rawls, George Benson, Tower of Power, Bill Withers, Hall & Oates, The Winans, Walter Hawkins, and James Cleveland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Aileene Henderson of East Canton, OH; his infant son, Jermaine Todd Henderson; grandson, Sergio Mitchell-Henderson of Texas; brother, Charles Henderson of Canton, OH; and sister, Althea Henderson of Bakersfield, CA. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Lori Henderson; six children: Tammara Cox of Reston, VA; William Antez (Maria) Henderson of Mooresville, NC; Bertha Kelly (Colon) Purdie Jr. of Davidson, NC; Tanya (Charles) Burke of Lawrenceville, GA; Suzy (Ryan) Wallace of Canton, OH; and Taylor Henderson of Canton, Ohio.  He is also survived by his sister, Veronica (Michael) Cheek of Canton, OH; brother, Dean Cornell Henderson of Canton, OH; eight grandchildren: Aryon  Mastin, Taylor Sanford, Amari Henderson, Aria Mastin, Adonis Henderson, Colon Jermaine Purdie III (CJ), Kassidy Perine,  Ryan Wallace Jr. and Anthony Martinez Henderson along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and dear friends. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers of the Cleveland Clinic and Specialty Select Hospital for their extraordinary care and support of our beloved Billy.
