Steven Edward Williams, Sr.'s Obituary

Steven Edward Williams, Sr., a proud U.S. Navy veteran, father, and spirited soul with a love for laughter and song, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025 at the age of 68, after living courageously with Parkinson's disease and memory loss.

Born on June 29, 1956 in Canton, Ohio, Steven was the son of the late Reynold Williams Sr. and Viola (Stephenson) Williams. He attended McKinley High School and would later go on to earn his GED through Job Corps in Indiana—an early sign of his determination and resilience.

Steven lived a life rich in service, adventure, and joy. He served honorably in the United States Navy as an electrician, a role in which he demonstrated both technical skill and dedication to his shipmates. During his military career, he traveled to more than 50 countries and earned membership in the elite group of sailors known as the Golden Shellbacks—a rare honor awarded to those who cross the equator at the Prime Meridian and the International Date Line simultaneously. His time in the Navy shaped his deep appreciation for culture and connection.

More than his military accomplishments, Steven will be remembered for the joy he brought to others. He loved to sing and had a special place in his heart for R&B oldies, often filling a room with soulful melodies and fun memories. His quick wit, infectious humor, and unforgettable jokes brought laughter wherever he went.

In his final years, he was lovingly cared for by his former spouse, Patricia D. Williams, whose compassion and devotion were a constant source of peace and strength.

Steven is survived by his three children: Sheree (Marlon) Gibson of Tyrone, GA, and Danielle Fontes of Canton, OH—both from his union with Patricia D. Williams—and Steven E. Williams, Jr. of VA, from a later relationship. He is also survived by his cherished grandson, Adam Patrick Gibson, the son of Sheree and Marlon, who brought him great pride and joy.

He is also survived by his favorite brother, Reynold (Rebecca) Williams of Massillon, OH and two sisters, Sheila Williams Shafer and LaVois Williams, both of Canton, OH. He was preceded in death by two sisters, LeVora Thomas and Rebecca Reese, who remained close in his heart.

He also leaves behind a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will cherish his memory and the joy he brought into their lives.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of SarahCare of Belden Village, Heritage Villas, Sprenger Health Care Rose Lane Nursing and Rehabilitation, and Buckeye Hospice. Your unwavering care and love for Steven brought great comfort during his journey, and your kindness will never be forgotten.

His legacy is one of service to his country, song, and laughter. He leaves behind a deep well of cherished memories.
