(Chappell) Burton
June 24, 1923 – October 25, 2022
Sallie Burton departed this life on October 25, 2022. She was born on June 24, 1923, to the late Floyd Chappell and Sallie (Evans) Chappell. She was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings – Floyd Jr., Wilmer and Dock Chappell, Hazel (Chappell) Green, Corrine (Chappell) Grant, and Maxine (Chappell) Hammond. She was also preceded in death by three of her children – Benetta A. Burton, Samuel Burton Jr., and Wendeline (Burton) Ross.
She began her Christian walk at an early age at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Lanett, Alabama where she was baptized. She continued to serve the Lord in Canton, Ohio at Peoples Baptist Church, under Reverend William H. Cotton and New Beginnings Foursquare Gospel Church, under Pastor Walter S. Moss. She dedicated her life to education and worked as an educator with Canton City Schools for 32 years. She started her teaching career for Canton City Schools in 1954 at Market School. During her career she taught thousands of children at Allen, Youtz, Martin, Lathrop, Washington, Roosevelt, and Dueber Elementary Schools. She also worked in the Title 1 program. Even after retirement, she continued her dedication to education by working part-time at the Stark Board of Developmental Disabilities.
Mrs. Burton graduated from Lanier High School in 1941. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Alabama State University in 1947 and was just short of obtaining a Master of Science in Education from the University of Akron. She was a member of the Canton Professional Educators' Association and the Leila Green Alliance of Black School Educators.
She is survived by her aunt – Lula Mae Roberts; two daughters - Beverly (Michael) Bush and Debbie Burton Cheatham; grandchildren Andre' Lamar (Kristen) Burton, Joshua (Dominika) Ross, Jacquelyn (Calvin) Terry, Jordian Ross, Jessica Cheatham, Montel Bush, and Imani Bush; great grandchildren – Olivia Burton, Andre Jr. Burton, Naomi and Noelle Terry, Chloe Ross, Johannes, Kingston, and Karter Burton.
She leaves to cherish her memories a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends. Her faith, courage, and strength remained solid throughout her life.
