Sallie Hart Britt, 106, went home to be with the Lord on June 19, 2021 at Portage Trail Village, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Sallie retired in 1980 from Hawthornden State Hospital as a Food Service Specialist.
Sallie was born December 12, 1914, in Montgomery, Alabama to Arthur LeGrand Sanders (Bubba) and Mariah Bertha Kelly Sanders. As a child, Sallie attended Lomax Elementary School and Loveless Junior High School. Sallie had to leave school to help her parents on their family farm. Sallie met her first husband, J.D. Graham, and they were married in 1936. J.D. and Sallie had one son, James Douglas Graham, Jr., who was born on November 15, 1936.
Sallie worked at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama for Colonel Daug and his wife for several years before he was transferred to Europe. Then Sallie moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she worked as a domestic helper at the Metropole Hotel and also in private homes. J.D. and Sallie separated, and Sallie moved to Akron in 1952 where she has lived ever since. She met and married Walter Britt in 1953.
Sallie Hart Britt had been a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church since January, 1952, where she proudly served lunches weekly. Sallie lived by her favorite scripture Psalms121:1 "I lift up mine eyes to the hills from whence cometh my help, my help cometh from the Lord".
Preceded in death by parents, Arthur & Mariah Sanders; brother & sister-in-law Henry & Mary Sanders, grandson Terrence Powell, and grandson-in-law Fred Walker.
Sallie is survived by devoted son James D. Graham, Jr, devoted granddaughters, Valerie Graham and Elizabeth Stevens-Walker (Fred deceased), grandson James D. Graham III, devoted niece and caregiver Janet Sue (Bruce) Payne, nephews Henry (Helen) Sanders, and Arthur (Rosa) Sanders. She is also survived by 10 great grandchildren, 21 great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
