Ruthie A.
Hankton
January 12, 1954 – July 11, 2023
Ruthie Hankton, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, mentor, and friend, rests in the arms of our Lord after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Ruthie peacefully passed away July 11, 2023. She was 69 years old. A lifelong resident of Akron, Ruthie, affectionately called "Mama Ruth" by some of her children, was born Ruthie Ann Hankton January 12, 1954 in Akron, Ohio to Odessa and Wilbert Hankton, Sr. Always in high spirits, positive, and full of gratitude, Ruthie had a warm and welcoming personality making it easy for all she encountered to love her instantly. She was an inspiration who was adored and admired by many who knew her. She was a faithful woman of God who loved the Lord, taught her children and grandchildren to love the Lord, and was instrumental in the lives of countless men and women. Ruthie's courageous battle with pancreatic cancer never stopped her from living her beautiful life to the fullest. She enjoyed her role as caregiver both professionally and personally. She was active in church and ministry. As a member of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, she enjoyed ministering and fellowship. Ruthie was very active in the AA program mentoring, sponsoring, starting meetings, and chairing committees. She loved the program and those in it, freely sharing her wisdom of 28 years of sobriety. She found joy and her purpose in the AA program where she served. She also enjoyed her time in the game room with family and friends and speaking into the lives of those she loved. But most especially, Ruthie cherished time spent with her children and grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. She made sure everyone gathered together for holidays and birthdays, loving on family and friends who were like family, at Mook and Danielle's house. Ruthie was a dedicated mother and grandmother treasuring her children and grandchildren, embracing every moment with them. We are forever grateful for the many memories, love, advice, and great times spent together. Ruthie was preceded in death by her mother, Odessa Hankton, father, Wilbert Hankton, Sr., sister Rumba Johnson, and brother Wilbert Hankton, Jr. (Jr. Man).
