Brown Ph.D.
March 19, 1938 – March 26, 2022
Ronald P. Brown, Ph.D., age 84, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2022, after an extended illness. He was born in Kent, Ohio on March 19, 1938 to the late Paul and Agnes Brown.
Ron graduated from Kent Roosevelt High School in 1957, where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He was awarded an athletic scholarship for basketball and track to The University of Akron. He also received an honorable discharge from the U.S Army prior to receiving his Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate degrees. Amongst his many accolades, he was selected to the UA's Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. Ron served as Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of Multicultural Affairs, and Assistant Professor of Pan African Studies at Kent State University's Ashtabula campus for 14 years. Ron was a cultural diversity consultant, workshop leader and public speaker who served on the boards of multiple community groups. He also coordinated the local Brother-to-Brother project, and a prostate cancer awareness initiative in Summit County, which was recognized as a model program by the Ohio Department of Health.
Ron was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church where he sang in the Men's Choir for many years. He was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He enjoyed cooking, playing cards and attending family reunions across the country. Ron was a devoted Christian, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, and Friend. Many have been touched by his life and all that he did. He loved his family dearly.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Todd Mason.
Ron leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 60 years, Joyce; daughters, Lisa Brown and Paula (Michael) Hubbard; grandchildren, Tyra (Rudy) Taylor, Maurice, Briana, and Todd Mason, Liana Brown, and Maegan Hubbard; great-grandchildren, Gavin Taylor, Kennedi Mason, Daylon and Madison Simien, and Sekani Payne; brothers, Curtis Dixon, and Jon Baumgartener; brother-in-law, Lester (Sharon) Jones, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
The family graciously acknowledges the many acts of kindness, comforting words and displays of love shown to them during Ron's illness and at this time bereavement. With special thanks to the staff of DaVita Renal Center and Summa Hospital. The family requests your continued prayers and support as they adjust to the absence of their loved one. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.
