Pastor Bobby
Joe Grant
April 22, 1952 – February 17, 2024
Born in Montezuma, Georgia on the morning of April 22, 1952 Bobby Joe Grant was the first of twins to be born to the union of Marvin and Bertha Grant. Bobby grew up and attended school in Montezuma, graduating from Douglas High School in 1970.
Pastor Grant was soon drafted into the United States Army and served nearly two decades, attaining the classification of Staff Sergeant and joining the International Brotherhood of Masons. During his time in Fort Hood, Pastor Grant hesitantly answered his call to preach, asking that if he would go, that God would go with him.
In 1979, Pastor Grant settled in Akron, Ohio amongst family and friends. He met and courted Linda J. Cabiness at his family church, Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, marrying her in December 1980. To this union was born one daughter, Jocelyn Elizabeth.
Pastor Grant was employed in the aircraft breaking industry for nearly 20 years.
Pastor Grant was a lifelong member and served at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church first under the pastorate of Pastor Jones as Assistant Pastor and later served as an associate minister under Pastor King.
In 1988, Pastor Grant was installed as the senior pastor of New Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Ravenna, Ohio for 35 years, contributing to the community, serving families throughout Ravenna, Kent, Akron and beyond. Pastor Grant served a term as moderator for the Central Hope District of the Ohio Baptist State Convention. Pastor Grant labored daily for the care of the souls entrusted to his hands, often fasting and praying.
He leaves to mourn his passing: mother, Bertha M. Grant; daughter Jocelyn E. Grant. Siblings: twin- Barbara Grant, sisters: Jennie (Larry) Smith and Fannie (Bill Sr.) Brown; brothers, Dr. Jessie (Ray Wynn) Grant, Esq. and William Eric Grant. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends. He also leaves to mourn his loss, the entire New Mt. Calvary Baptist Church family.
