Obituary

Norman Austin was born In Wetumpka, Alabama on October 10, 1917 to the union of the late George Austin, Sr. and Lovie B. Austin (Floyd).  Along with his parents and two younger brothers, Norman moved to Covington, Kentucky.  He graduated from William Grant High School and attended Pepperdine University in California on an academic scholarship.  In Covington, he met and married Ina Belle Simon.  To this union one daughter, Lovie Delores was born.   Ina died in 1938, leaving Norman to raise a 2-year old daughter. Norman moved to Canton, Ohio in 1943 where he lived for 70 years.  Serving in the United States Army from March 1943 to March 1946, Norman was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.  He saw action in the European and Pacific Operations and duty on the 38th Parallel in Korea.  Norman shared his stories about World War II with everyone and was thrilled to participate in  "Honor Flight " which transports veterans to Washington DC to visit and reflect at the WW II memorial. He joined St. Paul AME Church in 1946 and married Betty Jane Daniels on January 19, 1948.  Lovie came to live with them in 1950.They were blissfully married for 59 years prior to her death in 2007. Very active in community and civic affairs, Norman was a member of the Urban League, N.A.A.C.P. for twenty-five years, former Treasurer of American Legion Post 204, and President of the Penguin Club for eight years. He served on the committee that made it possible for the hiring of Mrs. Dorothy White-Miller, the first black teacher in Canton City Schools, the committee to promote Ohio laws for public accommodation in hotels and restaurants, and the open and fair housing committee.  At the time of his death, Norman was an active member of the Ohio Public Schools Association (O.A.P.S.E.) and formerly served as the organization's Vice President and Treasurer.  He retired from Canton City Schools in 1985 after twenty-eight years of service. Norman departed this life on July 11, 2013 after living 95 wonderful and blessed years.   He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ina Belle Simon Austin, wife Betty Jane Daniels Austin, brothers George "Jake" Austin Jr., James "Hooks" Austin and grandson, Wallace Michael Hailey, Jr.  He leaves to cherish his memory; loving daughter and devoted son-in-law Lovie and Wallace Hailey; Canton, OH; grandson Vincent Leo Hailey (Pamela) and two great-grandchildren Jordan Thomas Hailey and Bria Jenai Hailey; all of Hanover Park, IL, a godson, Willie Cotton; Dayton, OH and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving relatives and friends.
