Myrtle
Peters
May 24, 1929 – October 19, 2022
Myrtle Peters went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 19, 2022, after a wonderful life. Born May 24, 1929, in Talladega, Alabama to parents Franklin and Lizzie Mae (Wills) Twyman, Myrtle was the fourth child and second girl in a family of ten siblings (Minuard, Hardin, Earlene, Lovell, Lonnie, Oliver, Paul, Frank Jr., and Joe Twyman).
At the young age of five, Myrtle showed a determine spirit as she attempted to do everything her three older siblings did; when they were away at school, she cried every day to go too, although she was too young at that time to attend school in Talladaga; her mother finally let her go to stop the crying. After about two months Myrtle then a tiny five-year old came face to face with a lady from the Talladega Board of Education who had heard about this tiny little girl in the 1st grade. After a nice and truthful conversation between Myrtle and Ms. Board of Education, she was "kicked out" of 1st grade and her mother was sent a note to keep her home until she reached the age of six years. Myrtle returned to school at the age of six, was tested and placed in the 2nd grade. The Twymans moved to Rome, Georgia for better opportunities when Myrtle was eight.
Myrtle accepted Christ at the age of 11; she was baptized and became an active member of the Rome, Georgia Springfield Baptist Church and a member of the Jr. Usher Board and served with pride.
At the age of 18, Myrtle married her first husband, Walter L. Childers when he returned home (Rome Georgia) from his service with the U.S. Navy and they moved to Akron, Ohio where his parents had moved earlier. She was a stay-at-home mom of Ricky, Ronnie, Kenny, Stanley and Denise, and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church as her North Akron parish home where she served on the Usher Board. She found the time and energy to become involved in community activities including President Bryan School Elementary P.T.A., President Summit County Council V.F.W. Auxiliary, and President District #8 V.F.W. Auxiliary and participation in various fund-raising activities for the betterment of the North Akron neighborhood.
Myrtle served with distinction with the Akron Summit Community Action Program as Myrtle worked tirelessly in her capacity of Community Organizer and Neighborhood Center Director, Employment Project Manager, Family Development Coordinator, Director of Education and Employment and Director of the Foster Grandparent Program and a delegate to the 1995 White House Conference on Aging, representing the senior population in the State of Ohio, until her retirement in 1998. She also served as a member of the Executive Board of The Area Agency on Aging.
Myrtle married her second husband, Ralph January 31, 1981, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Akron, Ohio. She continued her work in her Church, the community and full-time employment. Myrtle remained an active member in Mt. Zion Baptist Church until a serious illness, after which she no longer could attend, but remained a dues-paying member.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ralph Peters, sons Ronald and Kenneth Childers and grandsons Ricky and Brian Childers; stepchildren Cheryl Rhodes and Melvin Peters. She leaves to cherish life sons Walter L. Childers, Jr. (Kim) and Stanley J. Childers (Keren), daughter Dense R. Childers, stepson, Michael Peters; grandchildren Conswella, Monique, Cameron, Brandi, Nechelle and Jerome; several grand and great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
