Maurice D.
Wright
September 9, 1971 – October 8, 2024
Maurice DeShon Wright, known for his kindness and loving personality, passed away on October 8, 2024, at the age of 53. Born on September 9, 1971, he lived his entire life in Akron, Ohio. Maurice graduated from North High School in 1990 and attended the University of Akron for one year.
After high school, Maurice worked for 10 years at the Richfield Coliseum (now Rocket Mortgage Field House) in Richfield Ohio, Ohio. A passionate sports fan, Maurice had a special love for Ohio teams, especially the Cleveland Cavaliers, Guardians, and Browns. Although he was a North Carolina Tar Heels basketball fan, his heart belonged to The Ohio State Buckeyes. He was known for spending entire games texting and calling friends, offering play-by-play analyses as an honorary "football analyst." Maurice also had a deep love for wrestling.
In 1992, Maurice began working for the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority (AMHA), starting as a courier and later being promoted to a maintenance worker. During his 27 years there, he became known for his generosity, straightforward nature, willingness to listen, and ability to offer advice. He also served as Vice President of the union at AMHA. Maurice retired after a long and dedicated career.
Maurice had a wide-ranging love of music, enjoying everything from R&B, rap, country, rock, smooth jazz, bebop, and classical music. Before the internet, he enjoyed making mixtapes for friends. Maurice was also known as someone who loved to debate. Over the past four years, he was a guest analyst on his brother Daron's podcast, where he shared thoughtful perspectives on topics ranging from sports to politics. His insights often encouraged others to see the world from a new angle. In contrast to his love of debating, Maurice had a great sense of humor and a deep love for comedy.
Maurice's greatest joy in life was his role as a devoted husband and father. He truly loved and deeply supported his family. He and his wife Tonya shared 34 wonderful years together, including 27 years of marriage. Maurice was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Tonya describes Maurice as an amazing man with the biggest heart.
Maurice was predeceased by his mother, Barbara A. Wright, grandmother Classie A. Jackson, grandfather Leroy Jackson, aunt Shirley Franks and first cousins, Belinda Ross and Larnell Jones. He leaves behind to carry on his legacy his beloved wife, Tonya Wright, sons, Jamal DeShon Wright and Jalen Maurice Wright. He is survived by brother, Daron L. (Toyalisa) Wright, mother-in-law, Shirley D. Jones, father-in-law Charles Jennings, sister-n-laws Charise Millender and Shalina (Kathi) Jones and brother-n-law Huston Jones, nieces D'Ashilae Wright and Daryn Wright, nephews Erick and Dionte Jones and Lionel and Larell Millender and first cousins Terry Jones, Vanessa (Wallace) Karim, Van Jones, Julie (Edward) Mack, Juliet Shreve, Tosha Strong, and special cousin Alfonso Hodge. Maurice leaves a host of cousins and close friends Garrett Williams, Don Franklin, and Ron Dawson who will also cherish his memory.
