Margene Gloria May, departed this life unexpectedly on July 10, 2022. She was born June 30, 1944 to the late Bertha and Jessie Prowell in Columbus, Georgia.
Margene was a longtime resident and fixture in the Canton community. She retired from the Ohio Power Company as well as the City of Canton Building Department. Margene relocated from Philadelphia, P.A. Amongst her many accolades, Margene was a member of the Ohio Realtors –Ten Net program, assisting minorities in achieving fair housing in the early 80's and owned and managed multiple properties in the Canton and surrounding areas. She was an advocate for community care and reform, where she worked as director and chairperson of the Monroe Center as well as being a member of the OHO Black Leadership Caucus. Margene served as a member in Dehoff Friends of the Library, where she addressed affairs of the community and was also an editor of a Neighbor Community Letter, which is distributed monthly. Margene was a fervent, casual art enthusiast and was once recognized by the Oprah Winfrey Book Club for her artist endeavors. Her work can be viewed at the Dehoff Library as well as a mural in her honor, which is located in Nimisilla Park, and honor she was granted for her art and charitable contributions to the Canton community.
In addition to her parents, Margene was preceded in death by her sister, Edna Prowell; brother, Eugene Prowell, and sister-in-law, Carrie Prowell.
Margene leaves to cherish her precious memories to her only son, Mark Momie; three grandchildren, Samantha Hogan, Elijah Farrakhan, and Jiara Mitchell; special friends, Roberta Covington and Elizabeth Miles, as well as a host of great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
