Lynnette L.
Miller
April 22, 1946 – May 2, 2026
ST. PHILLIPS CHAPEL
11:00 am - 12:00 pm (Eastern time)
Lynnette Lavonne Miller passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, after a short illness. She was 80 years old.
Born on April 22, 1946, in Akron, Ohio, Lynnette was the beloved daughter of Charles (“Chuck”) and Gladys Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Josephine Lytle; her brother, Lenard Miller; and her devoted life partner, Charlie Boykin.
Lynnette was a loving and proud mother to her two sons, Martin de Porres (“Lamar”) Griffin and Jumaane Miller, born from her early marriage to Levert Griffin (deceased) and her relationship with Charles (“Chuck”) Howard (deceased). Her greatest joy was her family, and she embraced every role in life—with love, strength, and unwavering care.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Martin “Lamar” (Fernando) and Jumaane (Tamille); her grandchildren, Imani Miller, TeShon Miller, and Monayja Miller; her sisters, Cheryl Harris and Linda Miller; her special friend, David Howell; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Lynnette never met a stranger and never forgot a name. Her warmth, kindness, and outgoing spirit made everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. She was known for her vibrant personality, infectious enthusiasm, and radiant smile that could light up any room. A devoted and compassionate caregiver, Lynnette lovingly cared for her mother, grandmother, great-aunt, and life partner as they aged and became infirm. Whether caring for family members in times of need, supporting friends, or serving her community, Lynnette gave of herself generously and wholeheartedly.
She attended Akron’s Lane Elementary, Crouse Elementary, West Junior High, and Buchtel High School, where she became widely admired as both a cheerleader and track star. Lynnette made history as the first African American cheerleader at Buchtel High School, a reflection of the courage and determination that would define her life.
Lynnette continued her education at the University of Akron, where her love of music and communication flourished. She shared her smooth voice and passion for R&B and jazz as a deejay on the university’s radio station, WAUP-FM 88.1, and later earned a master’s degree in mass media and communication.
A woman of deep faith and commitment, Lynnette was a lifelong and devoted member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. Baptized and confirmed there as a child, she remained an active and faithful servant throughout her life. She served the church in numerous leadership roles, including Vestry member, Senior Warden, and most recently, Church Treasurer. Her dedication extended beyond the church walls as she served as a liaison to the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, participated as a delegate to Diocesan conventions, served on various Diocesan commissions, and supported the Northern Ohio Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians.
Professionally, Lynnette worked for Ohio Edison, Women’s Network, Roadway Express, and the Akron Beacon Journal. At both Roadway Express and the Akron Beacon Journal, she courageously stepped into management roles traditionally held by men, paving the way for others through her confidence, leadership, and resilience. She retired from the Akron Beacon Journal as a District Manager.
Lynnette also proudly served her country in the U.S. Naval Reserves, attaining the rank of Ensign First Class. Her active-duty assignments in Japan sparked a lifelong love of travel and culture that led her to explore countries including Canada, China, France, Ghana, Mexico, Senegal, and Thailand.
Her love and pride in African American culture were reflected in her vibrant style and entrepreneurial spirit. Passionate about authentic African and Afro-centric art, clothing, and artifacts, she founded the small business Four Sisters And A Brother.
Lynnette lived a life rooted in faith, family, friendship, and service. She loved deeply, gave generously, and touched countless lives with her compassion, humor, and joyful spirit. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her. May her memory continue to be a blessing and a source of comfort to those she leaves behind.
A Mass of Christian Homegoing will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church 1130 Mercer Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44320. A Celebration of Life luncheon will follow at Our Lady of the Cedars Banquet Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. Cards and condolences may be sent to: The Miller Family, 623 Kipling St., Akron, OH 44311.
