Lovie Delores Hailey's Obituary

Lovie Delores Austin Hailey entered this world on December 19, 1936, in Covington, Kentucky; the only child of her parents Norman Austin and Ina Belle Austin (Simon). Her mother passed away when Lovie was not quite two years old, but she was lovingly raised by her father Norman and her grandmothers Sarah Simon and Lovie B. Floyd Austin. (her namesake) She was her father's only child, and their relationship was true blue and tight like glue!! In 1950, Lovie moved to Canton, Ohio to live with her dad and wife Betty Jane Austin (Daniels). Lovie dedicated her life to Christ at an early age and worshipped with her grandmothers in Kentucky. She became a member of St. Paul AME Church and later St. Benedict Catholic Church, both in Canton, Ohio. Lovie graduated from Canton McKinley High School. It was there that she met her future brother-in law Nate and consequently, the love of her life and husband Wallace Hailey. Lovie and Wallace were hit by a drunk driver on her prom night in May of 1954. After recovery and realizing that life is too short and should not be taken for granted, they were married later that year at St. Anthony Church on December 18, 1954. Wallace Michael Jr. was their first son to arrive, followed by Vincent Leo who perfectly completed their family of four. Enthusiastic about helping people, Lovie pursued a career in Nursing. After graduating from Kent State University, she became a dedicated and compassionate Registered and Certified Perioperative Nurse. She retired from Mercy Medical Center after 37 years of service, as an Operating Room Nurse, Neurosurgical Coordinator, Ophthalmology Specialist and as the supervisor in Minor Outpatient Surgery (MOP's). She volunteered with the American Heart Association and was a Lifecare Family Health Board of Trustees member. Lovie was a Past President of the Canton Negro Oldtimers Women's Auxiliary, charter President of the Greater Canton Chapter of the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN), member of the Ohio Association of Colored Women's Club, former president of the Black Queens Federated Club, member of the Still I Rise book club and member of the Catholic Interracial Council. "Love Joy" was also a proud purple and red wearing member of the HOF Purple Passion Red Hatters. Wallace and Lovie were world travelers and especially adored cruising. Australia, Nigeria and a 30-day cruise through the islands of the South Pacific were just a few of their favorite destinations they visited together. They were truly blessed to have visited Italy and had an audience with the Pope in Rome. They adored their grandchildren Jordan Thomas and Bria Jenai and took them to Alaska, Mexico, and many family reunions throughout the country. Lovie was the family historian and helped organize the first ever Floyd-Austin-Mumford family reunion over 46 years ago. She knew how to throw a great party and most of Canton had surely been in the basement or backyard on Freedom Avenue at some point. One of the greatest celebrations ever was for their 50th wedding anniversary and vow renewal in December 2004. After an amazing journey, Lovie departed this life on February 19, 2026. She is lovingly reunited with her parents Norman and Ina, stepmother Betty, and her first-born son "Michael". Forever cherishing her memory are her husband of 71 years, Wallace Michael Hailey Sr.; son and daughter-in law Vincent and Pamela Hailey of Hanover Park IL, grandchildren Jordan Thomas Hailey of Orlando FL and Bria Jenai Hailey of Elgin IL; sister-in law Delores Weir of Canton OH; nephew Gino Hailey; nieces Pamela Y. Hailey, and Carla Turner (Steve) all of Canton OH and niece Tina Carter of Oak Forest IL; goddaughters Robin Johnson and Ashley Dunivant of Canton OH and Natalie Hinds of Los Angeles CA and special friends Lois Butler, Dominga Hall, Gerry Radcliffe and Misty Camp. She will fondly be remembered by a multitude of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other family and friends too numerous to mention. You know she loved you!!
