Obituary

Leon E. Motley, Jr., 93, of Canton, OH, passed away peacefully at home on June 18, 2023. He was born in Canton, OH to Elder Leon E., Sr. and Maud (Gardner) Motley on April 19, 1930, one of nine children. After attending McKinley High School, he began working at Republic Steel from where he retired after 38 years. His employment was interrupted by his service in the Army during the Korean War.

He was united in marriage to Leomer Looney on July 5, 1956. To that union two daughters were born. Leon enjoyed talking about living on Canton's SE side, especially Lafayette, and his time in the military. He was a wise and practical man whose dry sense of humor was a hidden gem shared with few. He was a self-taught carpenter and an all-around handyman who, according to his daughter, Barbara, was the best Daddy she ever had. Listening to gospel, jazz and classical music and playing Spider Solitaire were some favorite pastimes.

He is predeceased by his wife, Leomer, parents, siblings, and daughter, Barbara. Leon is survived by his daughter, Norma (Columbus, OH), nieces, nephews, cousins, "sons" and "daughters."
