Sister Lela M. Phillips, a cherished resident of Akron, Ohio, gracefully entered this world on February 13, 1939, in Union Springs, Alabama, to the late Willie and Tena Phillips. On November 13, 2023, she peacefully transitioned to eternal life at home, surrounded by the warmth of family and friends, including her special great nephew, Marquise Wallace. She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Union Springs, Alabama.

Lela's journey in life was marked by her unwavering devotion and love as a sister, a great-great-great auntie, cousin, and friend. Her educational path led her through Bullock County, Alabama, starting at Lee Elementary School and culminating in her graduation from Merit High School. A true athlete, Lela distinguished herself as a first-string basketball player and found joy in the art of bowling.

Adding to the richness of her life, Lela dedicated over 30 years of her professional career to serving our nation's veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Her commitment to their well-being showcased her compassion and unwavering sense of duty.

As a pillar of strength and commitment, Lela was a dedicated member of New Hope Baptist Church, where she served with distinction as the president of the Usher Board for many years. Her impact extended beyond the church walls, as she remained actively involved in the community, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Lela is preceded in death by her brother Ben C. Allen, sisters Martha Bonner and Maggie Mae. She leaves behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew her.

She is survived by her loving brothers: George (Patricia) Phillips of Detroit, Michigan; Willie (Rozetta) Phillips of Akron, Ohio; SSG (Ret.) James (Gwendolyn) Phillips of Huntsville, Alabama; and Willie Clarence (Sarah) Allen of Union Springs, Alabama. Additionally, she is survived by her sisters Annie P. (Walter L.) Harris of Montgomery, Alabama, Essie L. Wallace, her caregiver and devoted sister in Akron, Ohio, and her special nephew Willie (Pete) Phillips III. Among those she leaves behind is her paternal first cousin, Clemmie Mae Phillips Martin.

Lela will be fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including four longtime companions who shared in her joys and sorrows. Together, they formed a bond that transcended the passage of time.
