Family and friends, we mourn the loss of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. This is indeed the hardest thing we have ever endured. If we hold on to her legacy of faith, strength, and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, God will see us through these turbulent times.
Kimberly Shipp Foxx, affectionately known as “Kim,” was born September 20, 1964, in Bronx, New York to the late Mabel Hogan and the late Alfred Shipp. She attended PS26 and Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary Schools in the Bronx and later Canton City Schools in Canton, OH.
During her teenage years, Kim traveled back and forth from Ohio to New York. After the birth of her oldest child, she decided to make Ohio her permanent home. Realizing the need for some kind of training, Kim completed her GED in the Canton City Schools. She was then employed in the health care field as a Home Health Aid. She gave so much care and love to others just like she did for her own children. She had a giving heart that longed to nurture others despite the struggles of her past. Even in her hardest times, she stayed strong. In fact, her daughter describes her as “the strongest woman I know.” Despite the loss of our oldest siblings, and the incarceration of our brothers, our mom never stopped fighting. She never stopped praying. Rather, she held on to God’s unchanging Hand.
Kim worked very hard to provide an honest living during the years of her childrearing. She did menial jobs including traveling with the circus, cleaning apartments and houses for occupancy, and reaching out to help those who just needed a hand in any way she could. She knew that if it had not been for the Lord who was on her side, she would not be able to do anything.
Kim was a woman of strong faith who was an active member of her church. She believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and in the power of prayer. She had learned the importance of knowing Jesus as her personal Savior and what it meant to have an intimate relationship with her Lord and Savior. She was a member of The Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Canton. She loved her church family and her Pastor dearly. Her worship and praise were real. At any time, it was not strange to hear her respond to the preacher, “Go Head,” or to witness to the preached Word with a loud voice, “Preach,” or “Amen.” That corner where she always sat will never be the same.
Kim was always the life of the party, never a dull minute. She was the family “socialite,” who never met a stranger. She had a passion for dancing and danced circles around most who dared to take the floor with her. She was also an extraordinary writer. Her “way with words” touched so many lives with comforting and encouraging words. Even in the hardest times, she stayed strong, like a true warrior. She has left us with a long-standing legacy of how to overcome adversity. She shared her light with everyone.
Kim’s style of dress was quite unique. Much of what she wore was very different once she gave the outfit her personal touch. She had a passion for creating and styling wigs in many different colors. When she stepped out, she always had an outfit unseen because of her special creations.
Kim loved her family and enjoyed having them around. She was an active figure in the lives of her twenty-one grandchildren. Each of them held a special place in her heart. Each one is a testament of her devotion to her seed. Family gatherings, family dinners, and spending time with her grandchildren were some of her favorite pastimes. At Christmas, she was always the glue
that held our family together. She saw to it that they were all a part of the festive holiday celebrations. Those of us who knew her best will miss her sorely.
As we lay you to rest today, yes there are tears, but we hold tight to your memory knowing your love and spirit will always guide us. We do so with the assurance you are now free, no more pain, no more worry, and no more suffering. One day we will meet again in the place prepared for God’s prepared people.
