(Boykin) Mccowin
May 27, 1937 – December 7, 2025
On May 27, 1937, in Lineville, Alabama, Mattie and Dallas Boykin were blessed with a daughter they named Josie Lee Boykin. In 1940 the Boykin family relocated to the Kent, Ohio area, where Josie finished high school and enlisted into the United States Navy. There she met her husband Robert, and they had 3 beautiful children.
After separation of marriage, Josie moved to Akron, Ohio with her 3 children. While working in the retail business, she went to school to get a cosmetology license and a Bachelor of Science degree from Kent State University. She also volunteered at the Salvation Army and served on the board, before ending her work career. She studied to be a surgical technician. Josie retired from Akron Children's Hospital as a surgical technician.
Josie's life was a testament to great resilience and unwavering dedication. She approached every challenge with unyielding determination. She taught her children the true meaning of fortitude and commitment. She instilled in her children the values of hard work, perseverance, and integrity. She was a fierce protector and tireless provider, ensuring every opportunity was available to her children through her deep sacrifices and unwavering support.
On Sunday, December 7, 2025, Josie went home to be with the Lord.
Josie is preceded in death by her parents, Dallas and Mattie Boykin; brothers, Willie James, Garfield, Grover, Wilson, Cephas, and Charlie Boykin; sisters, Noree, Claudia, and Annie; great grandson DiAnte Jr. (Lil Dee); adopted son, Karrington "KK" Whatley.
She is survived by her brother, George "Pete" Boykin; son, Anthony Lee McCowin; daughters, Cynthia McCowin, Robin McCowin; grandsons, DiAnte, Dallas, Robert Jr., Rogerick; granddaughters, Tiara, Kamesha; great grandchildren, Niyah, Naomi, Romeo, Roman, Benjamin, Myles, Mason, Kennedy; special adopted son, Gregory C. Griffin, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Josie will truly be missed.
