Obituary

Johnnie Mae Martin, age 68 of Canton, Ohio was born on July 16, 1947 in Earle, Arkansas to the late Charles and Edna (Gillem) Mayo. The ninth of thirteen children, her family relocated to Canton in 1956. Johnnie Mae accepted Christ at an early age in March of 1974 at a Women's Day Service at Wooster Temple Church of God in Christ, in Akron, Ohio, which is presently Ashworth Temple.  Johnnie Mae was a faithful worker in the church and longtime member of Wells of Joy under the leadership of Pastor Lloyd Kinlow. She loved being with the saints. She loved to travel to all the International Women's Conventions, state and national. She was a woman who loved to dress and look good. Whenever you would see her she would have on what she called "THE TOTAL LOOK". "Johnnie Mae was a woman of class." She loved to shop. Johnnie Mae was married to Earl Martin on October 12, 1987, and remained married and deeply in love for 28 years. Earl was a devoted and loving husband who was also her primary caregiver and loved her dearly. She had many accomplishments; she received her formal education from McKinley High School. Johnnie Mae was employed with Georgia Pacific Paper Co. and retired after 25 years of service. She also was a licensed missionary, evangelizing in the community with other missionaries. A diligent worker in the church, she was founder of the Mayo family reunion starting in 1984. Johnnie Mae loved her sisters and brothers and traveled near and far to keep up with them. Her two sons which she raised by herself were very dear to her heart. Her granddaughter Tamia, she also raised and was the apple of her eye. Preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Edna Mayo; three sisters, Eursie Lee Mayo, Louis Jefferies, Della Byrd; two brothers, MC Mayo and Larry Mayo; a special uncle Flanders Gillem. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her devoted husband of  28 years Earl Martin; two sons, Gino (Traci) Bell, Victor Bell; three granddaughters, Ashley C. (Leon) Bruins, Tamia Bell, Briana Bell; one grandson, Gamiere Bell; one brother, Aaron Mayo; six sisters, Bernice Hurst, Edna Armstrong, Dorothy Ward, Thelma Jordan, Lavern (Tyrone) Mills, Rochelle Hinton, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
