Jamesetta Elaine
Leathers "Cookie"
January 26, 1948 – June 1, 2025
Jamesetta "Cookie" Leathers, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully transitioned from this life on June 1, 2025, at St. Luke Nursing Home, where she had resided since late 2024. Born on January 26, 1948, in Canton, Ohio, to Ovila Ransom and James Matthews.
Cookie was a light in the lives of all who knew her. A proud graduate of Canton McKinley High School, Cookie was best known by her cherished nickname, "Nana." She carried a nurturing spirit and lived a life of resilience, warmth, and faith. Despite life's challenges, she remained grounded in her relationship with the Lord, always trusting in His plan.
Cookie was a dedicated member of The Light in Christ Church and an active volunteer at the Community Drop-In Center, where she joyfully served others and extended her heart and hands wherever help was needed. Her home was a haven for many, always open to those in need of comfort or care. One of her greatest acts of love was stepping in to raise her three granddaughters—Shar, Nene, and Satyn—after the passing of their mother, Tammi. Though she was their grandmother by blood, she became "Mommy" in every way that mattered. She poured her heart into them, raising them with strength, compassion, and unwavering devotion.
Prior to her illness Cookie worked tirelessly as a home health aide with Ali Residential Services, giving compassionate care to others even as she faced her own health battles. After suffering a stroke in July 2024, she began a courageous journey of recovery, only to endure a second stroke in September. Though her words became limited, her love never did—her radiant smile said everything when words could not. She now rests reunited in Heaven with her beloved daughters, Traci and Tammi Griffin—her "girl girls," along with her parents, Ovila and James, her sister Shelia Troupe, and grandsons James Lucas and Elijah Leathers Leaphart.
Left to honor and cherish her memory are her devoted husband, Donald Leathers; her children: son Troy (Brenda) Griffin, and daughters Shawntay "Candy" Pratchett, Donette Leathers, Domonique (Raymond) Jackson, and Miracle Leathers; her grandchildren: Jerald Lucas Jr., Markeisha Griffin, Allay Lucas, Shartez Gordon, Shanise (Khris) Conley, Satyn Gordon, Briante Freeman, Devante Troupe, Destinee Cone, Makiya Leathers, Malaya Leathers, Arihanna Donald, Rodney Donald, Jr., Tiahna Griffin, Tiehra Griffin, Jordan Griffin, and Kennedy Parker; along with 36 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Cookie's legacy of kindness, faith, and unwavering love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She was truly one of a kind—a guiding light, a generous soul, and our beloved Nana.
