James Roy
Mckinnie, Jr.
November 1, 1980 – October 20, 2024
James McKinnie, Jr., affectionately known as "JR," was born on November 1, 1980, to Janice and James McKinnie, Sr., in Akron, Ohio. A proud graduate of Central Hower High School, JR was gifted with an extraordinary ability to fix just about anything. Pursuing his passion, he continued his education in HVAC training to further develop his skills. His devotion to craftsmanship and problem-solving led him to a fulfilling career as an entrepreneur, where he served his community by helping hundreds with heating and cooling service, minor home construction, and various contracting projects. He was known for his generous spirit and hands-on dedication, always ready to help a friend or family member in need.
JR accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age, worshiping at Good Shepherd Baptist Church under the guidance of his great-uncle, Reverend Horace Drake. His faith was a guiding force in his life, shaping his character, his values, and his compassion toward others.
At age 12, JR found a lifelong love in Darralynn Chapman, whom he first met when his family moved across the street from hers. Darralynn often says that after that day, JR "hadn't left her alone since". Together for 32 years, JR and Darralynn were married on August 27, 2005, with Reverend Drake officiating their union. The two recently celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary. Out of this beautiful marriage were born three beloved daughters, Jayla (21), Janay (16), and Janessa (11), who were the light of JR's life.
JR was fiercely protective of those he loved, particularly his wife and daughters, yet they also brought out the tenderness in his heart. His greatest joy was found in making precious memories with his family, from rising early to watch the sunrise over Myrtle Beach to competing (fully clothed) in a water obstacle course to the delight and laughter of his daughters. His daughters will forever be the center of his heart, his pride, and his joy.
JR leaves behind a legacy of love and loyalty. He is survived by his devoted wife, Darralynn; his cherished daughters, Jayla, Janay, and Janessa; his loving parents, Janice and James Sr.; his brothers, Deon (Brandi) and Jayson (Shatarra); his sister Alana; his nephews, Darveon and Braylon; his nieces, Alaia and Jae Elle; his mother-in-law, Brenda Chapman; his brother-in-law, Brent Chapman; and host of family and friends who will miss him dearly.
