Dr. Rev. Horace Lee Drake journeyed from earth to his mansion in the sky, Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 11:11 AM. Dr. Rev. Horace L. Drake was born February 5, 1933 in Docena, Alabama to Lawrence and Eula Drake. He was the ninth oldest of 14 siblings. He came to Akron, OH in 1945 at the age of 16. He became a member of the United Baptist Church where he was baptized under the pastorship of the late Rev. J.H. Hall and later was ordained a deacon and he also worked in the Sunday School. While attending West High School, Rev. Drake lettered in baseball, football and basketball for four consecutive years, graduating in 1953 and then entered the Armed Forces for another four years. While in the U.S. Air Forces, he participated in football, baseball and boxing. On his return from the military, he reunited with the United Baptist Church and served as a teacher and Departmental Superintendent of the Sunday School, served on the Trustee Board and served as President of the gospel chorus. In December, 1971 Rev. Drake united with the New Hope Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev John H. Flinn and served as the chairman of the deacon board. He also served as a teacher and superintendent of theSunday School. In November 7, 1996 Rev. Drake was licensed to preach the gospel and on October 27, 1977, he was ordained to the Gospel ministry. Rev. Drake served as Interim pastor of the New Hope Baptist from November, 1977 until May, 1978. On September 2, 1978, Rev. Drake organized The Good Shepherd Baptist Church. Rev. Horace L. Drake married Kay Frances Carter in November17, 1956 and to this union they have one daughter, Michelle Linda Drake-Burros and one grandson , Lebron Burros. Rev. Horace Drake served in many capacities and among the few are as follows: Graduate of the Moody Bible Institute Evening School Bachelor of Theology Degree from Oakland Bible College Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Oakland Bible College President of the Akron and Vicinity Baptist Ministerial Conference Life Member of the N.A.A.C.P. Vice Moderator of the Northern Ohio Baptist District Association Member at Large of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A. Inc. Member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Coalition Committee Rev. Drake is preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Lawrence and Eula B. Drake; brothers, Plese, Sylvester and Lawrence, Jr. Drake; sisters, Lonnie Mae Drake, Gladys Sadler, Jewel Brooks and Eulean Lomax. He is mourned and greatly missed by his devoted wife of 60 years, Kay Francis Drake, their only child, Michelle Drake-Burros and only grandchild, Lebron (Kelly) Burros; step-great grandchildren, Constance and Barry; brothers, Cleophus Drake, Edward (Mary) Drake, Herman Drake; sisters, Mable Patterson, Beatrice Lewis and Almatto Head, all of Akron, and a host of other relatives and friends.
