Gwendolyn June Hamilton was born in Akron, Ohio on June 4, 1946, to the late Roosevelt and Bernice Annie McCormick. She was the youngest of 3 children. She was raised by her grandmother, Annie Marsh. She departed this life on January 18, 2024, after a brief illness while residing at Windsong Care Center in Akron, Ohio. She married Gennie (Gene) Hamilton on March 13, 1968, and to this union were born Gwen J. and Gene, Jr.

She attended Akron Public Schools. In between raising her children, she worked at Gardener Pie Company, and various janitorial and restaurant establishments. Her hobbies included bingo, visiting casinos, bowling, and playing cards. Gwen was a former member of New Trinity Baptist Church, Akron, Ohio.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, (Roosevelt and Bernice); husband (Gene), grandmother, (Annie); Stepmother, Laura McCormick, brother & brother-in-law Rubin (Louise) Hamilton and Charles Hamilton; and sister-in-law Linda Faye Simpson.

She leaves to cherish her memory daughter, Gwen J. (Kevin) Simpson of Akron, Ohio; Son, Gene, Jr. (Maretta) of Akron, Ohio; daughters, Dr. LaTaunya V. Conley of Elyria, Ohio and Henrietta (Calvin) Woods of Russellville, Alabama; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Wasson of Akron, Ohio; sister-in-law, Lillie Hamilton of Chesapeake, Virginia; brothers-in-law Bennie (Katie) Hamilton of Cincinnati, Ohio and James Hamilton of Seattle, Washington; aunt, Barbara Ann Clay of Akron, Ohio; special longtime friends, Evelyn Ann Voltz and Marsha Wilson; and a host of nieces and nephews.
