On Friday October 3, 2014 George Smith left his earthly life, two weeks after his 100th birthday. He was born September 21, 1914 in Huntsville, Alabama. His parents were George and Nancy Smith. He moved to Canton, Ohio in 1935. His employers were the Timken Roller Bering Co, Ohio Dept. of Transportation and his last employer was Stark County Engineers, wher he worked as a custodian. He enjoyed walking downtown, listening to the Cleveland Indians games on the radio and supporting the Democrats.
In 1936 he married the love of his life Bessie Moore and remained married to Bessie for 50 years.
George was preceded in death by his wife Bessie, son; Jesse Smith Sr., stepson; Carl Moore, five stepdaughters; Mildred Ivory, Sarah Fisher, Mary Meacham, Connie Rushin and Ida Lewis., three brothers, three sisters and one great grandson.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory his daughter Ruth Mathews, stepdaughter; Virginia Bentley, special granddaughter; LaVerne Mattox, grandsons; Jesse Smith Jr., Ted Mathews and Tony Mathews, nine great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren a host of step grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
