Gail Deborah Booker Peterson's Obituary

Gail Deborah Booker Peterson, (nee Young), 59, passed away March 26, 2013, in Jacksonville, Florida. Gail was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 28, 1953, to James Nabrit Young and Etta Inez Webb. She graduated from Lutheran High School East in 1971 and received a certificate in vocational nursing from Jane Addams School of Practical Nursing in 1975. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Ursuline College in 1981. Gail married her loving husband, Noah Albert Campbell Peterson, on September 11, 1999, before moving to Jacksonville, Florida where they built their beautiful life together. For more than twenty years, Gail cared for numerous patients as a Registered Nurse in Ohio, Maryland and Washington D.C.  From 1983 to 1986, she served veterans, VIP patients and her country as a Captain in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Aside from her time as a military nurse, her vast experience ranged, though not exclusively, from geriatrics and mental health care to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.  Gail's trademark combination of compassion and fierce intellect earned her the Ohio Mental Health Award in 1981 and a nomination for Suburban Hospital's Nurse of the Year Award in 1993. Passionate about her faith, Gail earned a Master's degree in Divinity from Howard University and was ordained as a minister in the Disciples of Christ Church in 1991. Putting her religious study and faith into action, Gail gave to and cared for the poor and disenfranchised while also graciously attending to the needs of her family and friends. She sought to emulate the life of Jesus Christ and edify his name far above her own. She leaves to mourn: husband, Noah Peterson of Jacksonville, FL; stepson, Brandon (Krista) Peterson of Springfield, OH; grandchildren, Abigail, Allison and Brandon Peterson, Jr., Jhané Carter and Jada Woods all of Springfield, OH; mother, Etta Young of Allen, TX; sister, Karen (Phillip) Sales of Wylie, TX; nieces and nephews, Dr. Alisha Gaines of Tallahassee, FL, Terence Gaines of Richardson, TX, Bradley Gaines of Doylestown, OH, Allison Gaines of Durham, NC, and Kathryn Gaines of Kent, OH; grandnephews and nieces, Gabriel, Kelley, Mackenzie, Tessa and Bailey Gaines of Kent, OH; uncle, James O. Webb, Jr., of Durham, NC; aunts, Rosa Benton and Charlotte Perry of Cleveland Heights, OH; and many other cousins, family and friends. Gail is predeceased by her father James Nabrit Young; grandparents James O. Webb, Sr., Bessie Ruth Eubanks, Samuel Young and Ann Elise Nabrit; aunt Frankie Webb; mother-in-law Virginia J. Freeman Peterson; and beloved pet Cupcake. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mandarin Food Bank at 11730 Old St. Augustine Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32258. Condolences can be sent to 12734 Camellia Bay Dr. E., Jacksonville, FL 32223.
