On Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020, Fredrick (Fred) Douglass Harkless, loving brother, uncle, friend and colleague, passed away at the age of 71. Fred was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Nov. 1, 1949. He graduated from Bowling Green High School in Bowling Green, Ky., in 1967 and later moved to Canton, Ohio in 1977 where he lived until his passing. Fred worked for the City of Canton in the Water District for over 30 years before retiring in 2015.
Fred was preceded in death by his father, Jefferson L. Harkless Sr; his mother, Nora Lee Harkless; his brother, Jefferson L. Harkless Jr and his twin sister, Nelhrie Deloris Haliburton. Fred is survived by his sister, Marie A. Morton of Los Angeles, Calif., Aletha Kay Wilhite of Lexington, Ky; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many close friends.
Fred truly loved his family and friends, but he also loved his Cleveland Sports teams and took pride in living in the same city as the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He never stopped rooting for his Cleveland Browns no matter how bad they struggled over the years. He was thrilled to celebrate the Cleveland Cavaliers first and only NBA Championship in 2016 led by LeBron James. That NBA title ended Cleveland's 52-year championship drought so you can image how much joy that brought to Fred, the city of Cleveland and surrounding communities.
Unfortunately, Fred's passing came unexpectedly, so funeral and memorial services are still pending and being arranged for a later date due to COVID-19 restrictions. Fred will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. We will forever keep him in our hearts and memories.
