Obituary

Fred J. Johnson of Las Vegas, Nevada, a Barberton native, passed away on Feb. 17 in Las Vegas. Freddie James Johnson was born in Barberton May 13, 1956. He graduated from Barberton High School in 1975, and from Miami of Ohio University in 1980, where he earned his master's degree in education. While at BHS Fred earned nine letter: three in football, three in track, and three in basketball. At Miami of Ohio, Fred played football four years as a kicker and wide receiver. He played in the Tangerine Bowl and kicked a record 47-yard field goal as Miami beat South Carolina in 1978.  In basketball at BHS, Fred is the career scoring leader with 1,367 points. He holds the second highest average with 19.8 points per game average over 69 games, and holds the highest single season scoring average of 22.7 points per game during the 1974-75 season. Fred played on two district championship teams 1972-73, and 1974-75, and was chosen to the first team all Ohio AAA team in 1975. Fred was living in Las Vegas where he was a high school teacher. He taught Business Law and General Business, and was the soccer, football, basketball and track coach. Everybody's favorite teacher earning multiple teacher and coach of the year awards. Fred said the people of Barberton were always supportive of him and the teams he played and enjoyed growing up in Barberton. Fred always said he was married to the school systems, and all of his students were his children. Fred was preceded in death by his parents Erma and Clifford Johnson Sr., grandmother Glennie Hughley Dowdell, Sister; Diane Marie Johnson, Nephews; Phillip, and Gerald Johnson, and Trenton Bozeman. He leaves to mourn his passing sisters; Barbara Johnson Love, Norma Johnson Miller, brothers; Clifford Jr., Mike and Melvin Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. His special and close best friends; Rick Beres, Raymond Vaughn, and Shawny Gaitor.
