Eugene
Dozier
January 17, 1936 – December 2, 2023
As a believer of Christ, everlasting life was given to Eugene Dozier on December 2, 2023.
On January 17, 1936, Eugene Dozier was the second child born to Olen and Inez Dozier in Gadsden, Alabama. At an early age, he cultivated a love for music, learning to play drums which led him to becoming the drum major at Carver High School. His favorite told memory was working at the local Negro Newspaper, The Call Post and watching Negro League baseball games, Gadsden Giants and Birmingham Black Barons.
Eugene married his childhood sweetheart, Lizzie Mae Mahogany and created a beautiful legacy of 5 children.
The couple connected with family in Akron, Ohio to make a new life in the north and spent well over 50 years in the community; joining Centenary Methodist Church and sending their children to North Akron Public schools. His first job upon settling in the Rubber City was working with veterinarian Dr. Barrett as an assistant. To continue solidifying their new foundation in Akron, Eugene and Lizzie became entrepreneurs in sales with AmPRO. He went on to work for Akron's Board of Education, where he retired. After retiring, he and Lizzie continued to serve the community with transportation services for elementary to high school aged children to and from school. Eugene's passion for drumming led him to create a band named The Martones. The band played all over Akron social clubs like the Silver Leaf on Howard Street, even for names like James Brown at the Agora in Cleveland, Bobby Bluebland and BB King. Music like blues, jazz, pop and R&B was a favorite pastime he shared with his family.
Eugene was an avid Cleveland sports fan; a fond recollection is him witnessing the Cavaliers win an NBA Championship. He strived to instill the importance of believing in the Heavenly Father, the meaning of family and obtaining a higher education to take care of oneself.
Eugene is preceded in death by wife Lizzie, parents Olen and Inez, sister Bobbie Lee, brother Alfonzo, son Clinton, son in law Sherwin Watford, great granddaughter Azure Speights and niece Carmen Martin. His memory will be kept alive through his sister Juanita (James) Martin of Toledo, OH, children Anita, Michael (Mary), Janis and Jeanna, all of Akron, OH, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives and significant other Julianne Johnson.
