Ernest "Bubba"
Johnson
December 1, 1923 – January 16, 2018
Ernest "Bubba" Johnson, went home to be with the Lord at home with his family near his side. Ernest aka "Bubba" and "Ernie" was born in Akron, Ohio to Eula Mae (Williams) Johnson and Leonard Johnson on December 1, 1923. He attended Akron South High School. Bubba joined the U.S. Navy in August 1943 and was honorably discharged in January of 1946. While serving in the U.S. Navy he earned three awards in support of World War II. Bubba retired from Babcox & Wilcox after 30 years of service. He and Harriet Nichols were married on March 9, 1943. To this union five children were born…Ernest Kenneth, Phyllis, Sheila, Gail, and Robyn. He was preceded in death by his wife Harriet; his parents, and his brothers, Ulysses and Willie Johnson and his great-grandson, Shawn. He was baptized in the summer months of 2013. His son, Ernie, witnessed to him about the Lord, and he accepted the Lord as his personal savior. Bubba was well known for being very a generous, and kind-hearted person and a true lover of people. He was never a stranger to anyone. He was a talented individual and a fantastic artist. Bubba could take 3x5 pictures and transform them into life size murals on basement walls. He loved playing the drums, whistling and singing. Although his sight was limited, when he entered Hill's Temple, his ear for music made him aware of the fact of whether there was a change in drummers from the previous service he attended. There was nothing wrong with his ears. He heard everything. His Frank Sinatra/Count Basie CD was heard by everyone who passed by him or any of his rooms. In gospel music, his favorite songs was, "Never Would Have Made It" by Marvin Sapp. On numerous occasions he said that this song reminded him of his wife, Harriet, because he said he "never would have made it" without her. Bubba was still playing his practice drum and keeping the beat of any song he heard at 94 years old. When he was in the nursing home, he loved getting visits from his children and grandchildren and even enjoyed receiving a surprise barbecue rib lunch from his favorite place, Ruby Tuesdays. Lately at home, he enjoyed conversations with grandchildren and family members, playing volleyball and playing his drum. He constantly brought smiles to the faces of others. His son and grandchildren referred to him as one who "had jokes". To celebrate his home going, he left their five children, Ernest K. of MT, and daughters, Phyllis, Sheila (William) Thomas, Gail McCraney, all of Akron, and Robyn of VA;14 grandchildren, Justin (Suzanah), Kristian (Christy) both of Green, Amber of Akron, Staff Sgt. Kenneth (Trisha) Thomas of KY, Angelique Thomas of Akron, Valerie of Columbus, Ernest K. Jr. (Sarah) of MT, Rhonda "Mandisa" (Matamba) L'Bert-Kaalima of Akron, and Endya of NC, Daryl J.
