Effie Grant, age 88 of Canton, passed away Tuesday evening, May 12, 2015, after a brief illness in Aultman hospital. She was born on December 9, 1926 in Weirton, West Virginia to Charles and Evelyn O'Neal.
After moving to Canton, Ohio at an early age, Effie was raised by her mother and step-father and attended Canton Public Schools. She graduated from Canton Timken Vocational High School in 1945 as the only African American female in her class.
She retired from Aultman Hospital in 1988 after working 34 years. Effie was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and served on the Senior Usher Board. She also served as Secretary of the Canton Chapter of the Alabama Green County Civic and Social Club for many years.
Effie was previously married to William Edward Mayo and five children were born to the union. Effie later married Jesse Grant and they shared more than 30 happy years together until his death in 2010. Also preceded in death by her parents, son Edward E. Mayo and infant daughter Marlene Mayo. She leaves to cherish her memory son, Larry (Rebecca) Mayo; daughters, Angeline (Charles) Hall and Patricia Renfro; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
