Obituary

Mrs. Edna Mae Lightbourn passed away into eternal life at Rose Lane Nursing Home on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 following an extended illness. She was born May 25, 1925 to the late Lucius William Wilkerson Sr. and Rosa Belle Wilkerson in Monongahela, PA. She was the middle child of three children. The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1925, where she was reared and received her formal education.  She accepted Christ at an early age, and was a member of Mount Olivet Institutional Baptist Church. She married her childhood sweetheart, Robert Lee Patton. To this union one son was born, the late Lloyd Kenneth Patton. Upon graduating from Central Senior High School in 1943, she enrolled at Fenn College, now Cleveland State University, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. She taught one year in Cleveland prior to moving to Canton, Ohio. Edna was united in holy matrimony to her second husband, Rev. Cecil A. Lightbourn on August 11, 1957, and together they were installed as Pastor and Wife of Mt. Calvary Second Baptist Church. Under the pastorate of her husband, she served as Directress of the Angelic Choir for many years, and sang in the Mt. Calvary Chorus, Mass Choir, and Senior Choir. She was also active in the Deaconess Ministry, the Christian Builders, and the Thespians (Drama) Ministry. Edna had a very kind, caring and loving spirit and touched the lives of all who knew her. She was cherished and loved by her husband who affectionately called her "Doll." Edna devoted her career as an educator and counselor in the Canton City public schools. She taught a total of thirteen years in the classroom at Martin, Lathrop, and Baxter Elementary Schools, and Lehman Jr. High. She was also coordinator of the Girl's Extension Classes (Pregnant Teens) for ten years. During her time teaching  in the classroom, Edna attended Akron University Graduate School and graduated with a Masters in Science Degree, specializing in Counseling, and attended Ashland University for Post Graduate Studies. She was a Jr. High School Counselor for two years.  She then applied for and received the position of Elementary Counselor, where she served for nineteen years. She retired in June, 2002  after forty-five dedicated years in public education. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband and son; brother, Lucius Wilkerson; and sister, Althea Brewer.  She leaves to cherish her memories, four nieces: Beverly (Cornelius) Turner, Linda Winfrey, Gayle (Lenny) Cozart, all of Cleveland, Ohio, Allyson Wilkerson, of Baltimore, MD; Goddaughter, Kay Waters of Springfield, TX; extended family: Gerald Lucius, Patty Johnson, of Canton, OH, Donna and Wendell Merrill, of Bolivar, OH,  Kelliea (Brent) Sigley, of  Westerville, OH, and a host of other relatives and friends.
