Debra D. Thurman's Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Debra D. Thurman, of Akron, OH, on March 17, 2025, at the age of 64. Born on November 11, 1960, in Demopolis, AL to Caleb "PeeWee" Thurman Jr. and Beatrice "Bootsie" Thurman, Debra was a proud mother, devoted daughter, loving sister, and caring friend.

Debra is an alumna of Garfield High School and two-time graduate of the University of Akron. She dedicated her life to helping others, personally and professionally. Debra worked in the medical field for decades, starting her career at City Hospital (Summa) and eventually transitioning to Akron General (Cleveland Clinic), where she worked as a Senior Tech. Known for her strong work ethic, Debra often received awards of appreciation and to the dedication of caring for her patients.

She was a member of New Exodus Christian Fellowship Church, led by Pastor Gregory Partridge Sr. At New Exodus, she held several leadership positions, including creating the Nurses Guild and was President of the Ushers' Board until her passing. She volunteered with the Food Ministry, Laborers of Love Women's Ministry, and was a steady presence at nearly every New Exodus event, when she was available. "I'm Going Home on the Morning Train" will always hold a special memory to New Exodus because Debra would often sing the last verse at benediction. She was recently rebaptized by her cousin and pastor on February 23, 2025.

Debra is survived by her daughter, Bronlynn; father, Caleb; and siblings, Wille Clyde and Alexandria. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins, close friends, church family, and coworkers. Debra was preceded in death by her mother, Beatrice; sister, Belynda; and brother, Gerald.

Those who knew Debra will remember her for her kindness, strength, and deeply rooted faith. She enjoyed spending time with her family, laughing with friends, and going on cruises to other countries. She had a gift of making others feel loved and supported. She will be deeply missed by all.
