Obituary

Known by many and loved by all, Mrs. Daisy Jeter Chandler's smile was her trademark.  She believed let my life speak for me and most assuredly it did. She was born in Shorter, Alabama into a Christian family of five July 16th, 1924. James and Florine Jeter along with their two sons and one daughter welcomed their second daughter with joy. While she was a great cook and baker she loved to do laundry.  Growing up in a home where her father read and discussed the Bible with them, she received a solid Christian foundation that she carried into her marriage and into raising her children. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior as a young child at Sweet Gum AME Zion Church there in Shorter, Alabama.

She was educated in the Macon County school system. Growing up she had an interest in clothing, fabric and design work.  After graduating from school she worked on the Tuskegee Institute campus where she was exposed to people who knew types of and care of fabric. This played a big part of her life after she left Alabama. In 1944 she married Jesse Neal Chandler. They moved to Louisville Kentucky, Cleveland, Ohio and in 1959 to Akron, Ohio where she resided until March of 2022. To this union four children were born. Mr. Chandler preceded Daisy in death.

The early Christian foundation she received from home and church was so deeply embedded in her that she brought that same spirit to her new church's in Ohio. They were active members of St. Matthew Methodist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. He served as an usher and she sang in the choir. Together they would go to the church on Sunday morning and place the coal in the furnace so the building would be warm for the parishioners when they arrived for service. They performed all of the custodial duties for the church as well.

When they moved to Akron, Ohio they joined Centenary Methodist Church.  She was known to be faithful in her service and commitment to the church. She held many offices in the church and served on the many committees. She served as a past Chairman of the Board of Trustee's, member of the following committees: Administrative Council, Van Committee, History Committee, Staff/ Pastor Parish Relations Committee, United Methodist Women of Centenary and Chancel Choir member. She was also a Lay Member of the East Ohio Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She is known for her Green Table for the Annual Rainbow Tea and Strong Supporter and Honoree at Centenary's Annual Hat Show. This is only a sampling of her work in her church. Her life service extended beyond the walls of the church. She was a past President of the East Akron Block Club, and a part of the East Akron Crime Watch Program.

Daisy worked for JoAnn Fabrics until she retired. She was a Seamstress that created all of the Special orders for the company. She was also an entrepreneur. She created and made custom draperies for families, professional athletes and various businesses.  She was well known for her design work, finished product and was sought after even when she retired from her own business. She traveled wherever her customers were located and personally installed or supervised the installation of all products. She loved people and children were always drawn to her. After retiring from JoAnn Fabric and her own children were grown, she felt she needed to continue to impact young lives. She went to work in the Akron Public School System as a cafeteria worker. She was able to use her big smile and encouraging words to impact the lives of many young people. She enjoyed traveling, singing, cooking, picnics, the arts, baseball, reading her Bible, visiting with her family and friends.

Answering when she heard her name called Sunday August 14th , 2022 she peacefully  joined the Heavenly host where all of her other 10 siblings and parents were there to greet her.  Knowing that we will see her again, she leaves to celebrate her memory, two daughter's Maxine Chandler-Auguste and Gloria Chandler (Ronnie Thomas) both of Tuskegee, Alabama. Son Lemual "Ricky" Chandler and Jacqueline Chandler Evans (Terry Evans) both preceded her in death. Her memory will continue to be celebrated through her grandchildren; Vincent Chandler (Rachel), LaShon Chandler, Lemual Ricardo Chandler Jr., Robert Chandler (Ruth), Jessica Chandler Hernandez (Roger), Jasmine Chandler, Lillian Evans and Terrance Evans Jr., (Jackie). She will also be remembered by her great-grandchildren; Lexie Chandler Dowdy (Kyle), Jordan Chandler Stertzbach (Chris), Jerico Chandler, Jermain Chandler, Jereacia Chandler, Jeanett Chandler, Cameron Keen, Andrew Chandler and Charlotte Evans.  She has 1 great great-grandson Noah Stertzbach. She also leaves one sister in-law Ella Jeter of Cleveland, Ohio. The host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends will also remember and miss her including Gloria Jean Chandler, her special care giver and friend Renee Richardson.
