Obituary

Ivory Clarence Roberts better known as Clarence Roberts was born on May 28, 1951, to Juanita Nelson and Timothy Roberts. Clarence was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended A. Leo Weil Elementary School, Herron Hill Jr. High School, and Schenley High School.

As a youth, Clarence accepted Christ at an early age. He was brought up in the church and guided by his foster parents, Tony and Mattie Robinson. He was a member of John Wesley AME Zion Church of Pittsburgh where he sang in the youth choir, learned discipline, and studied the bible.

As a member of the Centre Ave YMCA, growing up, it was like a second home. Clarence, affectionately known as "Butchie" was a member of the swim team, basketball team, and various other youth clubs. He also was true die-hard Steeler's fan.

Clarence worked for the Board of Education of Pittsburgh. When he moved to Chicago, he earned a certificate of completion as a welder. Clarence worked as a welder and a bus driver for the City of Chicago. After living in Chicago for some time, he met and married, Cynthia Glaze. Shortly after, he moved his family to Detroit, Michigan, where he worked for Chrysler Corporation. Feeling the need to be closer to his mother, Juanita (Nelson) Higgins, and brothers and sister, Clarence decided to move to Akron, Ohio where he lived out the remainder of his life.

In Akron, Ohio, Clarence worked for Allied Roofing and JR Wheel. He became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, and served as a Deacon. He also served at The House of the Lord Church and volunteered at the Haven of Rest shelter, where he was lovingly known as "Mr. C.".

Growing up, Clarence, was also known as "Blinkie." A name he earned far and wide for his exploits and tough demeanor while growing up navigating through the mean streets of Pittsburgh. He experienced his share of trouble in life but always refused to be defeated. He always rose above his circumstances and could light up a room with the candor of his speech, and would also lift you up with his advice.

As a father, brother, uncle and friend, Clarence was very protective of those he loved. He was especially protective of his big brother William (Sonny), although they are less than a year apart. At times, he felt like he was the older brother and if anybody wronged his big brother, "God Help Them." Born under the sign of the twins (Gemini), they could not be any closer than if they were actual twins.

Like his mother, Clarence was very meticulous about the way that he dressed. Everything had to be coordinated, from the Kangol hats in all colors, down to his alligator shoes and white Nike Air Force Ones. He was classy and had star power style. He shined wherever he went. He had the gift of gab and was always brutally honest. He stood up for what he believed in.

As Clarence became increasingly disabled from his condition, he would draw strength each day from watching T.D. Jakes, which was his source of daily inspiration. He would never end a conversation by saying "Goodbye." He would always end a conversation by saying "Much Love."

Clarence leaves us with the love that he holds sacred for all of us, especially his daughter, his "Baby Girl", Lashawrida (Lo) Fellows.

Clarence loved sports. Interestingly, in 1985, during Superbowl Week, Clarence made a life change that led him to relocate and during that time he lived with his brother Sonny. Now in 2022, during Superbowl Week, he made another life change and relocated to his final destination to his eternal home with the Lord.

"To be absent from the body is to be one with the Father in Heaven with eternal peace."

Clarence is preceded in death by his mother Juanita (Nelson) Higgins, father Timothy Roberts, foster parents Tony and Mattie Robinson, and two brothers, Robert Nelson and John (J.B.) Sanders.

He is survived by his wife Cynthia Roberts, one daughter, Lashawrida (Larvell) Fellows, five sons Ellis Roberts, Jamar Roberts, Terrance "Tiger" Roberts, Larry (Tangier) Williams and Johnny Reed; two brothers William (Sonny) and Steven Nelson, one sister Cynthia Higgins; mother-in-law Ethel Sherrill-Ware; 15 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
