BillieJean Mitchem, born on January 24, 1961, peacefully departed this life on July 9, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, compassion, and devotion to her family.

She was affectionately known as “Sunshine,” a nickname given to her by her first granddaughter, Michaela Powers, because BillieJean often used to sing “You Are My Sunshine” to her when she was a baby.

BillieJean dedicated over 20 years of service as a lead dental assistant, where her professionalism, skill, and caring spirit touched many lives. Answering a deeper calling to serve others, she later became a minister and then a licensed addiction counselor. In both roles, she was passionate about helping others find healing, hope, and strength through faith and encouragement.

Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she ministered to others with kindness, love, and a sincere desire to uplift those in need.

Above all, BillieJean cherished her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, wife, and friend whose strength and unconditional love touched countless lives.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Peter Mitchem; her daughter, LaKeyah Powers; her cherished grandchildren, Michaela Powers, Janiyah Powers, and Dannon Powers; her brothers, Stephen Powers and Michael Dudley; her sister, Delores Dudley; Tautionna Thompson; stepson, Peter Mitchem Jr; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and all whose lives were blessed by knowing her.

Although our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we rejoice in knowing that BillieJean’s faith has become sight. Her life was a testimony of love, perseverance, service, and purpose, and her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:23

BillieJean “Sunshine” Mitchem will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
