Betty (Garrett) Miller went home to be with the Lord on October 20, 2023. She was born on February 24, 1934 in Gadsden, Alabama to the late Selmo and Julia Garrett Lanier and moved to Akron at a young age. She graduated from North High School in January 1951. She married Raymond Miller, her high school sweetheart, on December 31, 1952.
She attended Hammel Actual Business College. She worked for Allied Microfilm Corporation for over 17 years where she was a supervisor and later worked for Heights Driving School.
Mrs. Miller was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for over 50 years where she served in the Mass Choir and the Missionary Society. She is a former member of the Eastern Star. She attended Providence Baptist Church in Kernersville, NC, until her return to Akron, Ohio in August 2020.
Mrs. Miller and her husband, along with her mother Julia Lanier, raised their four children in Mt. Zion. Mrs. Miller and her husband were also surrogate parents to several of their nieces and nephews, some of whom lived with them during their childhood.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband Raymond (November 20, 2022), half-brothers Willie Garrett and Selmo Garrett, and son-in-law, Daniel Ivy. She is survived by children: Arnett (Deborah) Miller, Deborah (Gavin) Cunningham (Winston-Salem, NC), Sharon Ivy (Clarksville, TN), and Juanita (Willliam) Wilson; sister Bernice Sigler; sisters-in-law Betty Long and Louise Harris (Killeen, TX); grandchildren Damian (Tan-Taisha) Cunningham (Lee's Summit, MO) whom she helped raise, Raylee (De'Andra) Miller (Clarksville, TN), LaKeshia Solomon (Murfreesboro, TN), Sharleen Ivy-Arrington (Clarksville, TN), Rukiya Miller, Deanna Nwosu (High Point, NC), Shannae Miller, Shantel Wilson, Garrick and Majadi Cunningham (Columbus, OH) and special niece LaKeia Neeley. She also leaves several great-grandchildren, two great great grandsons, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
