With hearts filled with love, gratitude, and cherished memories, we celebrate the life and legacy of Mother Barbara J. Wood, who peacefully entered eternal rest on June 13, 2026, at the age of 83.

Barbara was born on October 10, 1942, to the late Eddie B. Harris and Ted Banks. Born into a strong Christian family, she was introduced to faith at an early age and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the age of seven. From that moment forward, she remained steadfast in her faith and devoted her life to serving God, her family, her church, and her community.

Mother Wood's love for Christ was evident in every aspect of her life. She sang praises unto the Lord, played several musical instruments, and used her gifts to glorify God wherever she went. She was proud that the Christian foundation she received was passed down to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandson. Through her example, her family learned how to praise God during times of joy, trust Him during times of difficulty, and depend on His grace through every season of life. More recently she especially expressed one of her greatest joys was knowing that her children, grand and great grandchildren know who God is and understands the importance of having a personal relationship with Him."One of the greatest gifts she bestowed upon us."

A faithful servant of God, Mother Wood served as a Deaconess, faithfully sat on the Mother Board, and served as Minister of Music at Good Hope Baptist Church. Her ministry extended far beyond the walls of one congregation. Whenever and wherever her gifts were needed, she willingly rendered her services to churches throughout the community. Whether directing music, singing in the choir, mentoring young believers, or serving behind the scenes, Mother Wood answered God's call with humility, grace, and unwavering faith.

Music ministry held a special place in her heart. She faithfully served in both the Junior and Senior Choirs and was one of the original founding members of the Heavenly Gospel Singers, which began in 1974. Through song, she uplifted hearts, encouraged believers, and shared God's message of hope, healing, and salvation.

Mother Wood wore many hats throughout her life and was deeply committed to serving others. She worked with the Al Kaf organization, was a proud member of the Eastern Star Akron District, served as a foreign exchange student host, volunteered through the East Akron Community House, and dedicated much of her time mentoring youth and strengthening families throughout the community. Her compassion, wisdom, and willingness to serve left an indelible mark on countless lives.

Professionally, Barbara began her career as a healthcare worker at Middlebury Manor. She later held a contracted position with Coca-Cola, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic. She concluded her working career with Jeter Systems, from which she retired after many years of faithful service.

Mother Wood leaves to cherish her memory her beloved children: Pamela Collins of Akron, Ohio, Solomon Collins Jr. of Akron, Ohio, Eddie Thomas "Tommy" Collins of Jacksonville, Florida, Harold Ricardo "Rick" Collins of Akron, Ohio, Robin Collins-Billingslea of Las Vegas, Nevada, Ethel Collins of Jacksonville, Florida, Wilma (David) of Akron, Ohio and Sandra Franklin of Cleveland, Ohio.

She was the proud and loving grandmother of Tamika Collins, Diamond Smith, Camilla Collins, Cameron Collins, Ashaley (Lacy) Whitten, and Parris Sargent, Rhonda (Emory) Lee, and the cherished fur-great grandmother of Ace Collins.

Her legacy continues through her beloved great-grandchildren: Syerra Ramsey, Shayron Ramsey, Diamond Smith II, Gi'anna (GiGi) Collins, Kayshawn Pinkard, Kenneth Pinkard III (Mini Kenny), Ayah Collins, Kennedy Pinkard, Cameron Collins Jr., Ariel Whitten, Amari Whitten, and Aiden Whitten.

She was also blessed with the joy of her great-great-grandson, Zymir Smith, whose life brought a special smile to her heart.

Mother Wood also leaves behind her loving brother, Harold "Honey" Combs; her sister, Linda (Tony) Ridgeway; her cherished goddaughters, Annette Hazely and Antoinette Thomas; special nieces and nephew Laneia Senter, Michelle and Harvey Bryant, loving and devoted Bobby Glover family, among a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family members, dear friends, loved ones and all whose lives were enriched by her love, wisdom, and faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie B. Harris and Ted Banks, Sister Ardella Walker (Tootie), her beloved grandchildren, Eddie Hale and Sharae Ramsey. Her special cousin Steve Brown, and God son Carl Adams.

Mother Wood was a woman of extraordinary faith, strength, wisdom, and grace. She taught and led by example, loved without condition, served without recognition, and gave without expecting anything in return. Her life reflected the scripture she lived by, and her legacy is found not only in her accomplishments but in the generations, she inspired to walk with God.

While our hearts mourn her earthly departure, we rejoice in knowing that she has received her heavenly reward and now rests in the presence of the Lord she faithfully served throughout her life.

Her life was a beautiful testimony of faith in action, unwavering service, and unconditional love. The seeds she planted continue to flourish in the lives of her family, church family, and community.

Mother Barbara J. Wood's legacy of faith, family, music, service, and love will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
