Avie Lee
(Mccants) Boyer
March 1, 1936 – January 5, 2026
Avie Lee (McCants) Boyer, 89, gained her heavenly wings on January 5, 2026. Avie was the first born of eight children, to Rosie Lee (Jones) McCants and A.J. McCants Sr., on March 1, 1936, in Helicon, Alabama. She was baptized in the creek in 1944 at Helicon Baptist Church, laying the groundwork for her strong faith in God. From Alabama, the family briefly moved to Kentucky, then later that year moved to Ohio, on Akron's Northside, which she described as "having the most fun living in the cardboard houses." Her family joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church under Rev. A.L. Dykes in 1944.
Avie had a kind heart and loved to talk to anybody about anything for any length of time. She made many friends. She liked to attend events in Elizabeth Park and never missed a Sunday service at Mt. Zion. After graduating North High School, she briefly worked at a cleaners.
In 1953 she met Larry E. Boyer and later married in 1955. To their union four children were born, Larry "Rodney", Avie "Rosalyn", Garry "Reggie" and Stacie. Their house was like the kool-aid house, where her kids' friends came to play basketball, and hang out. She always cooked, and if you were there, she fed you.
She became an Eastside staple when she and Larry opened their own autobody collision shop named Boyer's Bump Shop in 1969. Avie was a master seamstress, and could duplicate any item of clothing or material merchandise. She made suits, ballgowns and tailored clothing for family and friends. With her talent, she became responsible for all custom ordered rag-tops or any special request custom linings for automobiles. Because of her, their body shop was one of the first to offer that service in-house, at that time. Avie was a social butterfly and participated in bowling leagues and tournaments and was a member of the Skylarks. In 1992, she slowed down after suffering an aneurysm and stroke. After a long recovery, she returned to work and graciously increased her social calendar.
She really liked to fellowship at Mt. Zion. So much so, she had become a regular at choir rehearsal with her sister, even though she didn't sing. She encouraged her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to participate in all of the Mt. Zion holiday recitals, Sunday school, bible study and vacation bible school activities. She became a devoted servant on the former Secretarial, Servants & Publications Ministry. She enjoyed thrift shopping, especially at Goodwill on Waterloo Rd., which she labeled "her store." She was present at every family reunion, no matter the location. She was an active member and supporter of the local family reunion branch and enjoyed attending fundraiser bus rides to casinos.
Avie was a true lover of life, but what she treasured more than anything was family and friends. She adored her family and cherished her friendships. Her favorite place to be was in the passenger seat on a ride to anywhere, with one or all of her kids. Family was her focus, and God was her light. We already miss her dearly. Avie was preceded in death by her parents Rosie Lee and A.J. McCants, Sr; husband, Larry E. Boyer; son, Larry R. Boyer; grandsons, Darrick Boyer, Anthony Brooks; DeAndre Andrus; siblings Bernice Cherry and A.J. McCants, Jr; sisters-in-law, Estelle Boyer, Beverly and Josephine McCants; brother-in-law, Ezell Smith; special cousin, Annie Garfield-Anthony; sisters-in-Christ, Doretha McDonald and Ivory DuBose.
