Obituary

Audrey Mae Carter Clay Pugh 91, transitioned peacefully on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at her home in Akron, Ohio surrounded by loved ones. Audrey Mae Carter was born March 12, 1931, in Hot Coal, West Virginia to the late Henry Marshall Alexander Carter and Ardelia Mae Carter. She was the youngest of nine children. Audrey Mae graduated from Byrd Prillerman High School in Amigo, West Virginia. Audrey Mae was a majorette and a fierce basketball player in High School. She could twirl that baton and demonstrated unmatched agility on the basketball court. As the young people would say today, Audrey Mae was a "hooper." Audrey Mae was baptized at an early age and began singing in the choir as a child. She was a singer in her own right and sang with many groups and choirs throughout Greater Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. Whenever she led a song and the spirit started moving deep down within, she began walking and singing as only Audrey Mae could… and she sure could sing and strut! Audrey Mae was a longtime member of New Hope Baptist Church. Audrey began fellowship with New Hope under the late Pastor John H. Flynn and continued serving under the leadership of Pastor T. Dewitt Smith, Pastor Benny Williams Pastor Marty Henderson, and Pastor Rev. Dr. David M. Nelson. She was an active member of the Mass Choir and the Mother's Board. Some of her favorite songs that she will be best remembered for were "Where Could I Go but To the Lord"; "Brand New Life", "He Saved My Soul"; "The Holy Ghost"; "That's Enough"; and all of the grands and great grandchildren's favorite "The Ship Out on the Ocean". Audrey Mae also was a member of The Order of Eastern Star and the Lebron James Grandmothers Club. Audrey believed in the importance of voting and led by example. She campaigned for many presidential candidates and her children. While campaigning, Audrey Mae had an opportunity to take photos alongside President Barack Obama and President Bill Clinton. She enthusiastically campaigned for and was blessed to witness her daughter become a Councilwoman and her granddaughter became the first Judge of the Carter Clan. Audrey Mae loved her children and they loved her dearly. Her family, biological and her bonus daughters and sons, were her heart. She was proud of all of her children and grandchildren and was not ashamed to let the world know how she felt about them. Audrey Mae met no stranger and had love for all. Audrey taught her children many things, but love and respect, were at the top of the list. She loved to play bid whist, gin rummy, and other card games with them. All the neighborhood children were welcome, there was always food, fun, dancing and singing in her home. Audrey Mae was preceded in death by her parents Marshall and Ardelia Carter; siblings William Buford, Mittie Fisher, James Carter, Henry Carter, Ollie Powell, Ozzie Williams, Cecelia Tate and Priscilla Hunt, one son, Lee Andrew Davis; two granddaughters Carla Boykins and LoShauna Clay; one great granddaughter Ivory Marshae Boykin, and one great grandson David A. Hart, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memories her children: Marsha Prince, Councilwoman Cassandra Nelson (Isaac), Arlene Clay, Beverly Godfrey, Walter Clay, Linda Clay, Larry Clay (Sorrenthia), Michael Davis, Audrey Moye (Lewis) and Carolyn Hart. 34 grandchildren, 76 great grandchildren, 37 great-great grandchildren, bonus daughter Brenda Rivers and hundreds of nieces, nephews and friends.
