April
Sherman
April 11, 1960 – January 29, 2026
April Sherman passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2026, after a brief illness. She will be lovingly remembered for her strength, kindness, and the deep, unwavering love she had for her family and friends.
April was born on April 11, 1960, to the late James and Rosie Smith. She was also preceded in death by her three brothers, Almond (Gloria Cox), James Smith Jr. (Karen Strickland), and Rickey Smith, and her sister, Annette Sledge (LaRon Sledge-Bey), all of Akron, Ohio.
A lifelong resident of Akron, Ohio, April was a proud alumna of North High School, Class of 1977. She carried a strong sense of pride in her roots and community throughout her life.
April began her professional career as a housekeeper at Akron Children's Hospital. Through dedication, perseverance, and an unmatched work ethic, she built a nearly 35-year career with the hospital, eventually retiring in a supervisory role. Her commitment to excellence and leadership left a lasting impression on her colleagues and the countless lives she touched along the way.
April's life was marked by resilience, integrity, and compassion. She was a deeply loving woman who cared fiercely for those closest to her, yet she was equally known for being straightforward and no-nonsense—someone who stood firmly on her values. Private by nature, April preferred a quiet life, but her presence was powerful, her standards were clear, and her love was unmistakable to those fortunate enough to truly know her.
She is survived by her loving husband of 25 years, Donald Sherman; her two sons, Tyrone Vickers and Terance Vickers (Kimberly Vickers) her brother, Alexander Cox; her sisters, Marcy Vaugh Perkins (Karl Perkins) and Patricia West;; and her six beloved stepchildren, Anthony Lamb, Chanel Sherman, Jamel Sherman, Chrissona Sherman, Eugene Sherman, and Gloria (Mar Amadou).
April was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother. She leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren: Jyazmiune Kerney (Angere Kerney), Jamel Townsend, Tyrell Vickers, Naila Vickers, Tyrone Vickers Jr., Marquis Shephard, Brooklyn Vickers, and Terance Vickers Jr. She is also survived by three precious great-grandchildren, Jailee Townsend, Jasmine Townsend, and Zhura Vickers.
She is further survived by special niece and nephews, Saquoya Sledge, Damon West, and Victor Cox (Tierria Cox); her beloved goddaughter, Sonja West; and her best friend, Sarnetta Bradshaw (Larry Bradshaw). April also leaves behind a host of other loving relatives and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
April's earthly journey is now complete, and she has entered eternal rest. As Scripture reminds us: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." — 2 Timothy 4:7
