Angel was born on November 28, 1979, to Karla and Ronald Burnham in Montclair, California. As a toddler, she relocated with her mother and brother, Ramon, to Medina, Ohio, where they began a new chapter in their lives. They were embraced by a welcoming community whose kindness and generosity quickly transformed neighbors into family. The lifelong kinships formed there became some of Angel's most treasured relationships. The families who surrounded them in Medina became an enduring village—celebrating life's joys, carrying one another through hardships, and remaining a constant source of love, encouragement, and support throughout Angel's life. As a child, Angel began to hone her athletic skills alongside her brother, Ramon, at Hershey’s Track and Medina Rec Center leagues. Angel and Ramon were inseparable growing up—true "two peas in a pod"—sharing adventures, friendly competition, and an unbreakable sibling bond that remained a source of love, strength, and protection throughout their lives.

From an early age, Angel distinguished herself as both an exceptional student and an accomplished athlete. During her junior high school years, the family moved to Akron, Ohio, where Angel continued to flourish academically and athletically and built a life devoted to serving others. She excelled on the basketball court at Central-Hower High School, earning the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level as a Division I student-athlete at Youngstown State University before continuing her academic and athletic career at Hampton University. While at Hampton, she earned both her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Master of Arts in Education, graduating magna cum laude. She later completed post-baccalaureate studies in Special Education at The University of Akron. Throughout her lifetime, Angel received numerous academic, athletic, and professional honors that reflected her relentless pursuit of excellence.

Angel married the love of her life, John Whorton, on August 10, 2003. Together, they traveled the world, embracing new cultures and experiences. When John played professional basketball in various countries including Turkey, New Zealand, Croatia, she immersed herself in new cultures and shared her passion for learning while teaching students abroad. The experience broadened her perspective, strengthened her commitment to education, and deepened her belief that learning has the power to connect people across cultures and transform lives.

Without a doubt, Angel’s greatest love and largest devotion was to her children. She and John welcomed their bundle of joy whom she affectionately named after her husband and her brother, John Ramon, in 2007. In keeping with the Whorton tradition, John Ramon, consistently kept a basketball in his hands. With his basketball wristbands which he insisted on wearing, he mastered his shot before he could even walk. John Ramon was Angel’s “Bubba” and her “Delicious”, and she reminded him often that he was “looking like your momma” on the basketball court. In 2009, Angel’s mini-me, Kara Evon, was born. She twirled into life with an energy and confidence that reminded everyone of Angel, who affectionately called her “Beanie”. Whether supporting Kara in her dance dreams, her baking marathons, or her artistic projects, she loved to watch her daughter blossom as she grew. Until the end, Angel made it clear that she wanted to be here for her kids and that she needed her village to continue to protect, support, and love her two greatest joys.

Beyond her own biological children, Angel dedicated herself wholeheartedly to educating, mentoring, and advocating for many children and families over the years. She served as a substitute teacher with Medina City Schools and was the director of the Akron Urban League Summer Enrichment Camp. She was also an acclaimed Intervention Specialist at Cuyahoga Falls High School, Richardson Elementary School, and Hope Academy before transitioning to Akron Public Schools where she worked at multiple schools including Barber Elementary, Hatton Elementary, National Inventors Hall of Fame STEM Middle School, and I PROMISE School. Angel was an integral part of the development and continued support of The Growing Patch Childcare Center. Throughout her career, she became known as an exceptional educator, behavior coach, intervention specialist, mentor, and advocate. Education was never simply a profession for Angel—it was her calling. She believed every child deserved someone who believed in them, and she worked tirelessly to provide hope, guidance, and opportunity for every student entrusted to her care. Her impact continues to be felt by countless students, families, and colleagues.

Angel often described herself as someone who believed that “the impossible is possible.” Those words became the testimony of her own life.

During the final years of her life, Angel faced triple-negative breast cancer with extraordinary courage and steadfast hope. She sought expert opinions across the country, enrolled in groundbreaking clinical trials, and courageously pursued every opportunity to extend her life—not because she feared dying, but because she treasured living for her children. Through every challenge, Angel’s strong spirit remained. She continued to celebrate the victories of others, comfort those experiencing loss, and remind everyone around her that hope is never lost. Her strength inspired countless people, many of whom followed her journey and prayed alongside her from around the world.

Angel leaves to cherish her memory her beloved son, John Ramon; her cherished daughter, Kara; her loving mother, Karla; her devoted brothers, Ramon (Leanne), Marchello (Jasmine), and Ronnie (Tara); her precious Nana; her faithful companion, Star; special family members including the Tripps and the Slaytons, dear friends, colleagues, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, former students, and countless individuals whose lives were forever changed by her compassion and generosity. She was preceded in death by and her husband, John Whorton; her father, Ronald Burnham; and her sister, Ronisha “Fluffy” Radford.
