Almatto
Head
August 12, 1942 – June 18, 2023
Almatto "Maita" Head departed this life on Sunday, June 18, 2023. She was born to the late Deacon Lawrence and Eula Drake on August 12, 1942 in Jefferson County, Alabama. She was the last of fourteen children born to this union.
Maita moved to Akron, OH in 1944 with her family and attended public schools in Akron before graduating from South High School as one of the top students in her class. She promptly enrolled in Nursing School and began work as a Licensed Practical Nurse at City Hospital in 1974. She worked for twelve years in Maternity before going back to school to become a Registered Nurse. Shortly thereafter, she made the change to working in Oncology at City Hospital through the change to Summa Hospital. She retired from nursing with Summa in 2017.
Upon retirement, Maita was a diligent caretaker and nurse for many of her family members. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. She also treasured her independence and quiet time, often choosing to stay home to read and tend to her garden. She especially enjoyed hanging out with her book club pals, both when they read books and visited area restaurants together. She probably enjoyed the restaurant trips just a bit more than reading the books!
Maita married Walter Head, an engineer, in Akron, Ohio on October 9, 1965. To this union, one child was born, Marla Renee. Although they would later divorce, Maita was kind enough to include Walter among the ranks of the family members she cooked dinners for and cared for when his health began to decline. They remained lifelong friends and visited Marla, her husband Mark, and their grandchildren, Taryn and Kennedy, as they were born and grew into their teen years. Taryn and Kennedy were liberally spoiled by Maita, and she cherished her time with them, visiting them often at their home so that she could join the family in keeping up with their hectic sport schedules. She especially enjoyed watching Taryn play softball and Kennedy play soccer.
Maita was also a faithful church member of United Baptist Church, New Hope Baptist Church and, finally, Good Shepherd Baptist Church. She served faithfully on the Nurses Guild at Good Shepherd and cherished her Christian family there, inviting friends to join her on many occasions.
In addition to Marla and her family, Almatto leaves to cherish her memory: a brother, Cleophus Drake of Akron, Ohio along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
