EUGENE HAMMONDS

Eugene (Gene) Hammonds passed peacefully from this life on the morning of May 21, 2019, surrounded by loving family members. Gene was born on March 17, 1951 in Pittsburgh, PA to Leon and Ora Hammonds. Gene attended school in Pittsburgh and graduated from Westinghouse High School in 1970. In March of 1971 Gene started his Career with AT&T in Pittsburgh, and later in 1975 move to the Arlington, VA and Washington DC area. Gene was then transferred to Chicago IL and later to Akron Ohio where he retired in July 2007. Gene started a new Career with H & R Block in 2015 and continued to work there until his passing. Gene enjoyed the outdoors and his travels took him to many places in the US including many trips to Alaska, as well as trips to the Caribbean and a trip to the Mediterranean where he travelled to six different European countries. Gene was very active in the Masons and was a member of these Prince Hall Masonic Houses.  Phoenix Lodge #112 (Blue House), Zerubbabel Chapter #40 (Royal Arch), 15217 Commandery #36 (Knights Templar), Bezaleel Consistory #15 and the Al Kaf Shrine #109. Gene was also a member of the Elks, I.B.P.O.E.W, Pride of Rubbertown #1594.

Gene is preceded in death by his Father, Leon Hammonds, Mother Ora Mae Hammonds, Brother Robert Earl Hammonds, infant daughter Tenisha Linda Hammonds and numerous Uncles, Aunts and Cousins. Gene is survived by his four children, Marshon Denise Fisher (Nikki), Seneca Randall Hammonds, Bryan Eric Hammonds (Chucky), Ashley Ozella Smith and five grandchildren, Micah, Valeah, Shalaundra, Ioney and Alayna. Gene is survived by Brothers Lynn Hammonds Jr. and wife Cece Hammonds, Frederick Hammonds, Sisters Morine Hammonds and Husband Michael Peeler, Linda Ann Hammonds and Tracey France and husband Jessie France. Gene is also survived by Nephews Robert Hammonds Jr, Derrick Hammonds, Mike Peeler Jr and wife Ruth Peeler, LaRon Hammonds, Chris Plack and wife Jamie Plack. Gene is also survived by Nieces Shawnda Hammonds-Slaughter, Darice Balabanis, LaToya Hammonds, and Turessa Hammonds as well as numerous great Nephews, Nieces and Cousins.

Local viewing will be at Rhoden Memorial Home, 1101 Palmetto Avenue, Akron, OH  44306,  from 4:00 – 6:00 PM on Tuesday May 28, 2019,  with Masonic Services at 5:00 PM.  On May 31, 2019, a second viewing will be held at 1:30 PM followed by Services at 2:30 PM at Coston Funeral Home, 427 Lincoln Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA, 15206.  .  Interment will be at the Homewood Cemetery, 1599 S. Dallas Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15217.
