Fred Mathews affectingly known as “Butch” passed away en route to Jamaica on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at the age of 71.  Fred was born in Canton, Ohio September 18, 1946 to the late Arnetta Mathews and Smith Mathews, Sr. He graduated from McKinley High School and went on to earn a degree from Bowling Green in education in 1964.  He worked a number of years for the Canton City School System as a Coach and Drivers Education Instructor. Fred enjoyed sports, especially football.  Most of his stats still stand in the top 15 in various area of high school and college football. He will be forever remembered for his authentic thirst and quest for knowledge.  One of his prominent loves was his second home “Jamaica”.  Fred embraced the land, the people and the culture.  It can be said that he was truly one of Jamaica’s “Native Son” as the people, the land and culture adopted him as well. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sister Lazora Mathews.  Fred is survived by a host of loving family and friends.  Fred leaves his spirit and knowledge with seven children.  Crystal White of Detroit, MI; Nevarus (Morgan) Miles of Fort Irwin, CA,  Eyraja Nash, Dana Tavares, Jahcina Tavares, Stephon Spencer, and Fara Mathews all of Canton, OH; (11) grand-children a brother Smith Mathews, Jr.; (2) nephews, Troy Mathews of Atlanta, GA and Michael Mathews of Canton, OH; niece Clarice Mathews Perry of Canton, Ohio as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
